I've beat Myst and Riven, and I think that they has one of if not the best story lines and world lore of any game, or book ever made. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but the story just intrigues me so much, and I love the idea of The Art. So is Myst 3 a good continuation? I haven't gotten it, as I'm a little concerned it was made by a different company and not Cyan. Does it have the same magic feel and atmosphere that is unsurpassed in Riven? Just wanted to hear some opinions on it, and no story spoilers please.
It's very good ! :)
Don't expect something that is continuing on the trend from Riven and thus exponentially better than it.

But they do a good job considering that it's not Cyan. The story is a bit of an offshoot from the main part that you've followed so far, but it's still directly related to the events that have occurred so far. I probably didn't fully appreciate the story until the ending.

World-building wise, they do a beautiful job. It's probably a different vision than Cyan would have ever had, but Cyan themselves ended up deviating from their norm quite a bit with Riven (as they discuss in the making of doc).

The feel of the puzzles was really what made it feel like a myst game, though. They really emulated the correct feel, while using the technology they had. The puzzles are easier and more self contained than Riven. More like the first Myst in that way. They're also solvable with a bit of thought. I don't think I used a strategy guide or sat there staring at it for weeks.

When it first came out, I was a little bit bummed that Cyan hadn't done it. But looking back, especially considering that Cyan/Rand were always claiming to get out of the Myst business and move on, the series couldn't have been in better hands for the third iteration.
i feel that coynedr has said it well :)

personally, i did like myst and riven more than i liked myst 3.
but i was definitely not disappointed by myst 3 exile.

there's a magical atmosphere, a good soundtrack, and a solid story that made me feel like i was still in the world that cyan had created..
above all, i found that there was a certain mysterious feelings, that was present in myst and riven as well.

depending on your taste; you should know that it is not cyan's work, and it shows.
but myself personally, i really enjoyed walking around the world of myst 3 exile.
i found myself wandering in beautiful places, supported by great sounds and music,
satisfying puzzles, and a fulfilling pace of the story :)

i absolutely recommend this game if you liked myst and riven.
just keep in mind that it's not cyan's :)
It is a really beautiful game, though not my favorite in the series, and I think you should give it a chance.
The guys posted above me, said it with better words, and I'm telling you go for it...

I Played Myst 1-4 and i loved each one of them! The Graphics get better in every game and you ll get deeper into the story. in 5 they made all 3d... its a shame :(
Yes, it's a solid followup to Riven and Brad Dourif is great in it.

For my money, Riven remains the masterpiece. That said, yes, Myst 3 and 4 are both great pieces of work (although if I ever encounter the authors of 3 in a bar, there are a couple things I'd like to discuss). Be careful at the end of 3: it's the only one in which you -- the Stranger -- can get hurt if you're careless about . . . well, you'll see.
Anybody else fall for the invitation to contribute to Obduction?

Totally. Riven is head and shoulders above the rest in my book. However, I'm always a little amazed that a non Cyan team could produce anything capable of following Riven. Guess it shows the world can be a surprising place.
sounds like it is based on conversation here and the past reviews. Wish Ubisoft would allow it for release through GOG.

or at all for that matter.
my daughter found a box of old games and looking for something to do for the summer tried getting them to work. hense I ended up on gog downloading realmyst and riven I am amazed at how much smarter than me she is she buzzed through myst in 2 weeks and is on riven, be nice if gog got 3 exile and 4 revelations and 5 end of ages so I don't have to pull my hair out trying to get a load of dusty old disks working ps I saw you added some doom games any chance of heretic I always liked that one
Myst II: Exile is very good - different from Riven, but very good. I've enjoyed all the sequential adventures since Myst/Riven, but am most captivated by Uru: The Complete Chronicles. Awesome is the word I would pick. Now I want to go back and revisit Myst and Riven, but I can't make then run on my Windows 7 Home Premium system!
