How do you save the game and then reload it. I can save it but the game starts as a fresh game each time I go back to it

Press ALT on your keyboad to bring up the menu bar, then click "File --> Open".

I tried this and still cannot restore/open a saved game. I can see the saved game when I go through windows explorer, but the File --> Open option is "grayed out" and I cannot select it when I press ALT. Is there another fix?

Try starting a new game, skip the dialogues untill you regain control and then move your cursor to the top of the screen to bring up the menu bar - try loading it from there.

I'm having the same trouble and the solutions offered so far don't work for me - I can click on Save, Save As, Open in the File menu of the game, but it just shuts the game down completely, I have to restart the game, I cannot avoid the starting screens and none of my progress has been saved.
Any other solutions?

I found a solution on some other site and it worked. When you start the game, do NOT click on "play game". Instead, press ALT to bring up the menu, then File, then Open your saved game. This should help. It always worked for me. Better than staying up for 25 hours to plan the game all in one sitting!

A solution that I found is if I Alt/Tab out of the game, it minimizes it on my task bar at the bottom of the screen. When I click on that, the game picks up where I left off.

It didn't work for me. When I Click File -> Open the game just shut down and I have to start all over again.
