So, as you may know, realMYST does not play well on Windows 8 because Windows 8 does not play well with DirectX 7 games. I was reading about getting things working for another game using the dgVoodoo DirectX wrapper, so I thought I would try it for the original realMyst, and hazah, it works!
Grab the latest dgVoodoo 2 package from http://dege.freeweb.hu.
In the zip file there is a MS folder containing two files: D3Dlmm.dll and DDraw.dll. Copy these files into your realMyst directory and run realMYSTSetup.exe to configure realMYST with the 3D hardware "dgVoodoo DirectX Wrapper" ( [dgVoodoo HAL] & [dgVoodoo TnL HAL] both seem to work fine) and to set your preferred screen resolution.
I still had to run realMYST.exe with WindowsXP compatibility get get the linking book video to work, but all in all, things seem to be working fine.
Addendum: if you wish to get rid of the dgVoodoo watermark, also extract the dgVoodooSetup.exe and run it. On the DirectX tab, there is a checkbox at the bottom "dgVoodoo Watermark" that can be unchecked.
