I downloaded and installed Riven today. The game will consistently exit to desktop when I click on the 'Save' or 'Save As...' menu items.
With a stock-standard GOG installation, the game comes with Windows 95 compatibility mode set. I tried unchecking this so that no compatibility mode is set. This resolves the problem and allows me to save my game.
However, it appears that it may not be reliable. In my brief play time thus far, 1 out of 3 attempts to save my game have caused the game to crash after typing my file name and clicking the 'Save' button. The game wrote a corrupt and unusable file in this instance.
I really don't want to have to endure random crashes while playing this game, especially when saving. Presumably GOG included the Windows 95 compatibility setting for a good reason and I am concerned that my removal of this setting may cause problems down the line.
I am using Windows 7 Professional (SP1) 64-bit. Is there a way to ensure that this game runs 100% smoothly?
P.S.: I saw another topic where it was suggested that copying the game files to a new directory solves the problem. I believe this is because doing so removes all compatibility settings. Thus, it is likely an unnecessarily complex way of solving the problem because it's effectively the same thing as unchecking the compatibility settings normally.
P.P.S.: Sorry, I should have made this topic a 'Question/Problem'. Perhaps a moderator can fix that.
