I'm fairly new to GOG, and I'm thinking about buying Myst. I heard good things about it when I was a kid in the 1990s, but I never tried it out. So would you recommend I get the Masterpiece Edition or Real Myst?
A little about my gaming habits: I have played very little in the way of old adventure games or old puzzle games, though I have played newer puzzle games, like Portal. I generally like games with good stories, the need for thinking, attractive visuals, and interesting choices.
This is a great game. I bought the Real Myst.. it has better real time graphics !
Better get the complete series.. +++
Personally I am for Real Myst. It is essentially the same game, but Real Myst has a little more content and I like the real 3d better than the slideshow.

Get both games, Real Myst & Myst M.E. If you have to choose only one then get Myst M.E.
And also get Riven without second thought!
Thanks to everyone for their input.
ntsmrtz: why would you recommend M. E. over Real Myst? I'll probably only be able to get one.

Because it's closer to the original version. Personally, it is something i prefer in games...
I was just wondering the same thing! What did you decide?
i have both and prefer ME. if you're going to play riven after (which i personally think is better than myst), there's more of a sense of continuity, as gameplay is essentially the same.
Its essentially the same game, but there are three distinct differences:

- gamplay: Myst me is an old school sideshow point and click. Its not as immersive maybe as real-time but it somehow feels more ambient than realMyst. Realmyst will let you walk anywhere that you want (if you've played portal then it will be like how it is before you get the portal gun) but this sometimes feels awkward.

-Graphics - Myst me has pre-rendered graphics and realmyst has real time ones. Myst me has old-looking textures that don't look "realistic" by today's standards, but it still has a weird photo-realism about it simply because the edges aren't jagged. Realmyst uses real-time graphics which look much more "real" in terms of today's games with textures and etc but it also looks very "cg"- jagged edges, occasional texture errors. Personally, neither of them end up feeling real the way Riven does for me so its really up to what you think looks more real.

-New Age- realmyst includes a small age at the end of the game which Myst doesn't have. Its nothing real special except for that it looks nice and connects to Riven a little more clearly. It is also mentioned in Myst IV.

Personally, I prefer realMyst because the story takes precedence for me and realmyst has that one age, but other than that its really down to personal taste. If you're comfortable with games like Portal then go ahead and get realMyst but if you can you might want to buy the me just to see what its like.

Either way, now adays Myst/realmyst is really just something you use to get to Riven, possibly the best game ever made. Play Riven.
Does anyone know how to get get past the organ in the space ship if you are tone deaf or not musically inclined? this is the one I just can't seem to do.

I saw a key board picture in the books in the library that shows the keys to click on. However, I can't save my game so I'm needing help with that too. I click on save game and when I go back to it, it is at the beginning. Any suggestions

When you load a save, you start back in the library, looking up. (Or you may be inside whatever Age you were in when you saved.) You actual progress was still saved, but it always dumps you back in the library. Unless your actual progress isn't being saved, in which case that's a bug.

The sliders you have to set in the space ship move in small increments. if your move your mouse very carefully you will notice it. The bottommost slider setting corresponds to the key on the very left of the keyboard, the next up corresponds to the second key and so on, inluding the black keys. So essentially you just have to count the position of the key on the keyboard and then move the slider into the corresponding position. It will probably help to set your mouse speed to a very slow setting.
I sorta want to see if it is your first time playing Myst to go with the ME so you can experience what it was originally like, but Real Myst just looks so much better.
Real Myst feels really clunky to me. Despite being full 3D with first person controls, you can't do things like sidestep or jump, which if you're used to playing first person games feels strange. More importantly, your movement is still on rails in a sense, because you can't walk over bumps and hills and can only go in certain places, and there are very few places you actually need to go (to see the various easter egg stuff) other than the ones the original lets you go to. And as mentioned above, the graphics are much more fake looking, even though they're newer.

Ideally I would like a remake that keeps the screen-based "slideshow" movement but with remastered visuals, kind of like what they did in Myst IV. I don't think being able to walk everywhere really adds anything to the game.
