This is a common problem, but none of what I've tried seems to work.

I bought Myst: ME for my wife for Christmas. Unfortunately, the game freezes -- sometimes in predictable spots, sometimes apparently randomly.

I have tried compatibility mode for Win95, 98, and XPSP2 and XPSP3.

I have disabled visual themes, run as administrator, and disabled display scaling. I disabled UAC.

I have uninstalled QuickTime and installed QT4. That just gave me a black screen when I started Myst, when the new QT at least started in the same compatibility modes. I reinstalled the current QuickTime, which made one of the consistent freeze spots work, but the game froze later.

I uninstalled Myst (it was in Program Files (x86)) and reinstalled it to C:\Games\Myst.

At this point, I'm more or less out of ideas. I read something pertaining to changing some code in realMyst, but I don't know whether the same change applies to Myst: ME.

I also changed the settings in QuickTime as detailed here.

That fix worked better than any of the others we have tried -- the game ran for a good 10-20 minutes before freezing again.
