When I load the masterpiece edition, I get a "Myst.exe has encountered a problem and needs to exit" message. I searched through this forum for help and attempted the fixes suggested. Changing the compatibility settings didn't help and I have Quicktime installed.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Larry
I have the identical problem, also on Windows XP. I turned on Compatibility Mode for Win95 and Win98 and in both cases it no longer crashes. Instead I get a blank black screen with a mouse cursor and a howling wind sound effect. No response to mouse clicks, though.

Moving the mouse, I can call up the menu bar and select File -> Exit; then I get the credits and the creepy music, and it exits normally.
I have the DVD version, so this may not be a viable solution, but I remember having similar problems.

The issue I had was Myst was looking for specific Quicktime files. I'm not sure which version is current, but the game needs two Quicktime 4.0 files.

QuickTime.qtp
QuickTime.qts

Those should both be copied to your system32 folder.

I'm having the same problem as drdt, except in my case it crashes in compatibility mode (Win 95 or 98/Me) and not when they're turned off. Otherwise the exact same symptoms.

I've tried a few things on the assumption that a QuickTime codec is causing the problem: upgrading the QuickTime included with the Myst installer, installing QT Lite (4.1.0) and QT Alternative (3.2.2), and installing QuickTime (7.7) before installing Myst. Nothing seems to fix the problem.

I sent in a ticket yesterday but no response yet.
When I look at the report you can send to Microsoft, my error is occuring in quicktimeaudiosupport.qtx when I start without changing compatibility modes. I do get the same error as drdt and Scrotch when I change compatibility modes. I also tried installing all the different quicktime variants without resolution.

BTW - thanks for your help, guar. Don't think it solved the problem, but I appreciate the assistance.
Have you tried completely uninstalling Quicktime and installing the version that's provided with the Myst installer?

You could also try running QT in safe mode. It looks like that has worked for some people. Select Quicktime from your control panel, switch to the 'video' or 'display' setting, and select the safe mode option.
Thanks to support, I have a fix for this problem.

I heard back from Ethaar of GOG Support on my ticket and he pointed me toward this thread:

http://www.gog.com/en/support/myst_masterpiece_edition/crashing_video_playback_issues_or_other_visual_glitches

The QuickTime 7 control panel would crash with some weird error whenever I clicked on the "Audio" tab, so I uninstalled it and installed QuickTime 6.5.2 instead. Changed video to safe mode and Myst Masterpiece seems to work like a charm now!

edit: Just noticed that guar recommends the exact same thing in his post above mine. The link provided includes explicit instructions on the process and a few links to download older/alternate versions of QuickTime.
