Hello everyone, I thought I'd share what fixed my various Myst and Riven problems.

For Myst, I was experiencing crashes when saving and freezes when any 'video' or animation in the game should have been playing. In Riven I was able to save, but the files would not be present when I attempted to load them.

I have the latest Quicktime from Apple's website installed.

Setting the shortcut to Windows 2000 compatibility fixed the missing animation and video playback.

Running the shortcut as an administrator fixed the crashes and saving issues.

Okay, thank you. I had major issues with the game last time I tried to play it (to the point where I just went ahead and bought it on the PSN even though I already bought it here - at least the game works on the PlayStation without any troubleshooting or issues, though playing with a controller is a bit tedious). Maybe this would fix it for other people who try to get the game to work here.
