Note: spoilers follow.

I've been playing Myst for a few days now, and have got to the point where I've collected three pages for each book, and located the fourth ones, but I don't particularly want to release either son (as I suspect them of working together against their father, though please don't tell me whether or not I'm right). As I've played, I've discovered two sides of a torn up message about accessing a Marker Switch vault on Myst, which I'm guessing is where the game ends.

I've read that it's possible to complete the game without even visiting all the ages if you know what to do, and I'm guessing it's through this method. Unfortunately, I can't understand the instructions, although thanks to the power of screenshots and image editing I can read them. It seems to say to turn off all the marker switches, finishing with the one at the dock, and then I'll get access to the vault. Doing this didn't do anything obvious, though, and I don't know where the vault would be. Do I need to turn the switches off in a specific order, or turn them all off without turning any back on in the meantime, or is it sufficient to turn off the dock switch with all the rest off. Have I got completely the wrong end of the stick?

I also don't seem to have found any purpose for the grill that drops down in front of the fireplace in the library, so I'm guessing that has something to do with it.

The instructions are to turn ON all switches on the Island and then turn OFF the switch by the dock

The grill in the fireplace is quite important but irrelevant for that bit with the switches, you don't have to do anything with the fireplace grill in order to acess the marker vault.
Odd. It looked like off to me, though the tear was there so it wasn't as clear as it might have been.

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: No, it distinctly says the 'off' position. See attached image.

Indeed it does, the text in that note is messed up in Myst Masterpiece Edition, the correct text should be,

"...Turn everyone of these switches to the "on" position. Then go to the dock and, as a final step, turn the Marker Switch there to the "off" position."
