I own Real Myst (original) from GOG, and Riven as well from here, completed both, loved them, love the whole series, watched Let's Plays of all 5 Myst games. It is a shame Myst 3 and 4 are not on GOG, because one, that would complete the series, and two, because they are great games. (I know some don't like 3 and vice versa) but whether they are your favorites or not, the reason why I made this post, was to remember the moments and talk about them, and maybe hopefully, they will digitally release those last 2 titles. (Cyan doesn't own rights to Exile or Revelation, Ubisoft does, so licensing issues I am aware of) but its been years so lets talk about the games :)

Myst 3 exile was a different game when I saw it come out back in the 2000s. The box art was cool, it made me want to buy the game. The visuals were fantastic, 3D free roaming look through the screens, and upon starting, you get to see this gorgeous sun room! The villain in the game, has a great back story, and the story over all is well done, there was no "story" in Myst, and beginning Riven, you only know about capturing Gehn. Yes the story unfolds in Myst later, but Myst 3 deals you the story immediately, and you have a purpose.

Myst 4: Revelation is a gorgeous game in terms of visuals, animations, and the ages as well. It is amazing to see all the actors in this game, the storyline is there, and yes I know some of the actors were not great at it, but still, it was nice to see it be like "real", and the ages were fantastic visual appeal, Serenia! The dream world was fun, I loved the "music video" that played , it was cute.

I enjoy the whole series, I only have beaten and played Myst, and Riven, but have seen all 5 games.
I agree. I hope GOG manage to get all the games in the series. There are other Ubisoft games already on GOG, Silent Hunter II is one of them. So hopefully perhaps one day we can see a complete Myst collection on here.

Yeah I saw that, Ubisoft owns Myst 4 , they published it and produced it, while Myst 3 was produced by Presto Studios, which is now gone, and part of Ubisoft, so, maybe one day. I know in 2012, Cyan and Ubisoft were in licensing talks, about money etc. but now it is 2015, so maybe one day.
I began my love affair with Myst on a system called 3DO, my boyfriend would rent the system and a racing game or two and one day I found Myst on the self. I picked it up, played it when I finally got the chance and I have been obsessed ever since. I some how missed the tower clues and the safe clues so I would spend countless hours starting at 1 then click the lever then 2 click, 3 click until the safe in the cabin was finally open! The puzzles fascinated me.

Since then I have purchased all the games played them all but sadly have never quite reached the end of Uru. ( very long game) I have the 3 books, and even found a comic book "The Black Ships." It was supposed to be a series of 4 comic books but sadly only 1 of 4 were printed.

this thread pertains to Exile and Revelation, I found Exile was wonderful while Revelation was too quick to be a movie with to much time watching sequences. it did help the story of the game but left me wanting puzzles to solve. Exile seemed to have a very good balance of character interaction either yelling at me the same kind of things over and over lol but at the same time making me rethink and retrace my steps. I enjoyed learning the Dini numbers and language making the other games and books in to a complicated diverse society that I was able to participate just a little bit more.

The series as a whole would be wonderful to play again but what I truely miss above all is Uru online. The game took on a life of its own and it brought the world to Dini and the events and the puzzles were so much fun. It was exciting to know that once every month or few months new things were being made to play and they made other puzzle worlds only able to solve by collecting other players to play them with you. It was truly a vision made real.

When I have heard the sound of a Myst book activated throughout the years it brings me back to the very first moment when I clicked on a moving picture in a book and my body did this horrible tense jerk with my heart pounding and I thought, "Oh crap now what did I do??" It takes me to a time where Everything was new and exciting and I had to touch everything to find out what it would do.

I love Myst and everything that the brothers Robyn and Rand Miller gave the world so far.
i really liked reading your post, Jenbodyart :D

i presume you are aware of Obduction, the upcoming game directed by rand miller?
i think it will be released Q4 this year!

but yes, the sounds of entering a book. say no more :D
thank you for your post! :)

I loved your post! Very detailed and yeah, I first saw Myst original back on my old Windows 98 days, and it pioneered the CD-ROM drives. I never understood Myst or its puzzles back then, I was only 8 or so, so the puzzles and game were too difficult, but I watched my Dad play it, and the game looked cool. Riven was than played by my Dad, it was Visually beautiful than, and we never got past the first few puzzles lol.

Fast forward, I am now 27, and have Real Myst on my PC and I finally beat the game, (with some help still) the Selentic Piano puzzle, yeah I cheated on that!) I have Riven now, and I beat that many times, and (yes help with the fire marble puzzle), but omg, still beautiful and love the music, and still play both games weekly even after beating them so many times.

I have seen let's plays of myst 3 and 4, and 5, but don't own them or never played them. Exile I would love to have, to continue story line, and because the story is amazing, and myst 4, because wow, completed the series, and it looks great too!
*Smiles* I am glad you liked my post. Since I wrote my post, I have downloaded Myst and Riven ( I started rummaging in all my older CD boxes looking for the Riven copy I had can't find it. Arrggh) I began playing them. I have completed both and now on to Exile.

Funny thing.. My 10 year old daughter has heard me talk about Myst and everything related once in a while and caught me on the computer playing Myst. Since I love point and click games and prefer them to shooting games because it makes you think logically and gives your brain a great work out. She is playing Myst and I told her how to work the tower and get the clues, she has completed Channel wood on her own. I have the chance to watch her reactions to the sounds and clicks and see her jump back in her chair the same way we all had done either when we solved a puzzle or heard a mechanism in the distance when we toched something and think " OH crap!! lol

I don't do well at all when I know I can die in a game, I tend to be the one that yells out of crap! and because I am so flusterd I push all the wrong buttons *way too intense for me*.. and racing games, I am the player that leans to one side or another when turning corners and looses control on the track.

BUCAKE; I didn't know anything about Abduction. I just did a bit of research and read a few aticles this morning. VERY COOL. I can't wait to play it.

SREAMER17ydr: what is Let's play? never heard of it.. I will check it out. and as far as Cheating goes. I cheated on the Marble puzzle on Riven I cheated on.. felt horrible and frustrated with myself but I never picked up on the clues for that puzzle.. it just didn't make sense to me at the time. NOWwwww when I played it .. the hole thing made more sense but I still don't understand the how to figure out the corrolation from the coloured lights to connecting it to the islands..
Sure I got the light puzzle and yes I noticed the symbols on the viewing wheel and one light is out (prison island).
Yes I did the island where you pull up the grid and find the dome but I have never found the link to tell me which colour is for which island.
I did just play and complete Riven and yes I did remember the colour scheme for each island and where to place them but the clue to figuring it out for which colour is for which island still eludes me.

A let's play is a video on YouTube that you watch other players play the game you want to watch. For example, Dilandau3000 on YouTube has tons of classic Let's Play videos, and he has all the Myst series too, from Myst Masterpiece edition, Riven, Myst 3, and 4, and 5 and Uru.

I understood the marble puzzle, like on Map island you said, I did that, and I got the colors, because one part in the game, the holographic lens in the underwater area, shows you the 6 color schemes, and than I wrote all the "fire marble" gold dome icons down, and than the 6 colors breaks down to 5, and that how you solve that, but PLACING the fire marbles on the grid puzzle I never could figure out, I hate figuring out grids and whatnot, so I cheated on that puzzle only *mostly* lol.

I love Channel wood, it so peaceful, Stone ship is easy, and Mechanical is once you figure out the fortress rotation puzzle, Selenetic is the hardest in myst I feel, just was crazy with the piano puzzle, still cheat on that every time, I hate that puzzle, and the sound maze in that age lol.

PS also a game called Lighthouse: The Dark Being, is myst like, and ONE of the puzzles in that game is a underground maze in the Volcano level, same as Myst's Selentic train puzzle, HARD AS HELL!

I want to buy Myst 3: Exile and Myst 4:Revelation, and I found on Amazon, a like new copy of Myst 4, that includes Myst 3 DVD rom bonus game, BUT I heard that Myst 4 messes up with all DVD RW drives, and unfortunately, I only have ONE optical drive and its a DVD burner, so I am afraid of buying it because I hate DRM software that messes up with optical drives.

Stoneship was so much tougher for us in 1993. Each screen took a second or so to load, so getting from the generator to the compass in time was stressful!

I just (re)bought Myst IV, and the 10th anniversary with Exile DVD on ebay. IV was $6 and the 1-3 set was $10. Both III and IV installed perfectly on my dvd burning drive on Windows 8.1. I do not know about the 3/4 set, but I'll bet the discs are the same. There's only one version of exile on DVD (1.0.27 I think), and I used the online patch to get IV up to the final 1.03 (from 1.0). Discs still read fine.
Just an FYI:

Some versions of the MYST III DVDs are known to not play music as they are missing the file Mp3dec.asi.

So be sure to google for the music patch or I just checked and it was still available here:

You might have to copy and paste the link and you might have to create a login on mystcommunity to download the file...

just posting to confirm this. i own both the CD and DVD versions of Myst III Exile:
the music of my DVD install would not play for me,
but the CD version played the music.
i read that they had simply forgotten to include this file on the DVD version. all you have to do is copy the file from the CD, to the "bin" folder of your DVD-installation.

edit: i have the official file available and can upload it to some site that doesn't require registration, if anyone wants it.

Seeing Myst 3 actually was what got me into Myst (I saw the playstation 2 version at the drugstore for like 10 bucks). It's probably my least favorite of the ones I've completed, though. (I've only beaten Myst Masterpiece, Riven, both versions of Real Myst and Myst 3). I do hope they come to GOG; I'm sure within the next few years they'll begin to have even more compatibility issues.

It seems like it wouldn't be that difficult, as I could have sworn I've seen Ubisoft games on GOG before.
Well that's done.. Myst, Real Myst, Riven, Exile, Uru, and End of ages..

I never did think the Revelations was that great..but I am going to play it anyway.
it is really interesting to go back and play this series. I find I whip through the puzzles much more quickly now that I am much older. the puzzles are a little more coherent yet I suppose it may have something to do with a faint familiarity since playing it once before.

The iconic sounds throughout the series either still startle me or they run chills down my spine. the little jingle in the opening sequence of Cyan and the shapes in blue as the ball cyan logo appears brings back the anticipation and excitement. then the linking sound always a hesitation thrill not knowing what is coming next.
some of the music in the games are eerie yet other music is just soothing like the room in the Gallery in Kadish.

It has been fun and I had a realization while playing although The games are still relevant and still addictive and frustrating at times.. I played them just as I did when my journey began. Ear phones, in the dark, with the brightness turned down and the contrast all the way up..... wonderful.... immersed in a world where only the mind and imagination takes over.

*smiles*
