The game will not work for me. If I start it through GOG Galaxy it my screen's resolution changes for a few seconds then Riven closes itself and the resolution goes back to normal. Any help would be appreciated.
Try running it through a scummvm dev build.
So ScummVM is the only way that it works on Windows 10 x64?

I was just able to run for about half an hour using the mods shown another post (unchecking all compatablity checkboxes and then modifying the QT control panel to use a setting...can't remember the name offhand). It crashed on me at one point on the steam island and of course I hadn't saved yet...duh. No time to try again tonight - but check out the other post, it is at least runable to a point for sure.
I've tried everything else I've seen on this forum on how to get Riven to run without crashing, except this ScummVM thing. I have no idea what that is or how to go about using it. Would you mind directing me to more info?

I'm trying to run the game on my Win 7x64 PC. I had lots of problems at first, but after reinstalling quicktime vs7 and several other things, I can finally run it, save games, and open games. But it still crashes every few minutes. It mostly crashes, it seems, when it starts to run an animation.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
I found a helpful Reddit post that details a method of playing Riven on modern operating systems (Windows 10 for me) and it works like a charm so far.

Here is the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/myst/comments/3k0xvd/psa_you_can_run_riven_perfectly_fine_on_newer/

I will paraphrase what he tells you to do as well as including some additional steps that I needed to take to make it work with the GOG version as his version assumes you have the game on CD/DVD.

1. Download a ScummVM nightly build. The build I downloaded was right at the bottom, Windows (64bit), and I downloaded the latest development build rather than the latest stable build (the stable build kept saying I was missing data files so I was unable to launch the game). Drag the folder from the zip to your desktop or wherever you prefer.

ScummVM builds download page: http://buildbot.scummvm.org/builds.html

2a. Check that you have the necessary data files in one folder, which for me was GalaxyClient/Games/Riven/Data. You should have all the files you need (ignore the optional ones) barring one, which we will cover in the next step...

Datafiles list: http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles#Riven:_The_Sequel_to_Myst

2b. Copy or move your Riven.exe file into the Data folder.

3. Open the ScummVM folder we extracted earlier and run ScummVM. Select Add Game and navigate to your Riven folder, select the Data folder and press choose. (You don't need to go into the Data folder, just select it).

4. Now select the game in your ScummVM main menu and press start. To play the game in fullscreen, press Edit Game, go to the graphics tab, tick override global graphic settings and then tick fullscreen mode. Press F5 in game to bring up a menu which allows you to save, load and quit. Also a nifty feature of ScummVM is that you can press F4 and it draws the selection boxes around the clickable zones in the game.

If you press start and ScummVM tells you that you're missing files, double check that all the files you need are in your Data folder (remember you need Riven.exe in there too). What solved it for me was trying out different ScummVM nightly builds, trying both 32 bit and 64 bit, stable and development.

I hope this is helpful to people, I know it's not the perfect workaround but if you've exhausted a lot of options then ideally this will be what you've been looking for. Happy adventuring!

Tried this?

...But what I did was install the 4.1.0 version of Quicktime components that come with the game, and then after that I installed direct from the Apple site the 7.7.9 version of Quicktime on top of the 4.1.0 version--I allowed it to install to the same directory as 4.1.0 default installed into. After that I opened Programs and Features, found "Quicktime 7" and used the "Repair" option--and presto! All the Myst games are running much better than they did with either the 4.1.0 included QT elements installed by themselves, or with Quicktime 7.7.9 elements installed by themselves in my builds of Win10x64...;)

That's what worked for me--I found that if you simply install the 7.7.9 QT over the 4.1.0 QT included with the game--the games still don't run that well--or they sometimes crash--until I used the repair function on the 7.7.9's as mentioned above.

This was for Myst, originally, but it also corrected a lot with Riven, GOG version, IIRC. I may try the Scumm version myself, however...;)

Edit: 8/24/2017 Now Running Windows10x64 Preview, build 16273, AMD RX-480 8GB, Crimson 17.8.1, and I'm sorry to report that despite my best efforts I cannot get Riven to run at all anymore. I was running an earlier Win10x64 Preview build when I wrote this post originally--and even without doing what I describe above, Riven would open a screen and run, just very slowly and with a lot of lag--pretty much unplayable. The steps above completely cured the lagging frame rate, but now, since I can no longer even get the game to open a screen, they are of no value. It may turn out that the SCUMM version may be the only one that will run from here on out!

The problem here is it is no longer GoG. It is ScummVM.

I do have the same problem where it launches, changes resolution and then closes.
i have an ipad so i'll use that
I wanted to second what clemite said: simply changing the compatibility of the Riven .exe to Windows XP (Service Pack 3) makes the game work for me on Windows 10 x64 (Creator's Update).
Wanted to add to my edited post above that neither the download version nor the Galaxy version is working.
OK, glad to report I now have Riven running perfectly on Win10x64, Preview Build 16273, on a RX-480 8GB running 17.8.2 Crimsons...! What a difference a day makes...!

The remarkable thing is that it's running perfectly with *no compatibility settings* on Riven.exe except for Run as Admin and DPI scaling set to "Application"...!

Additionally I have uninstalled QT Lite 4.1.0 completely and instead have installed by itself QT 7.7.9.xx--the latest and last version from Apple, available on their site. I changed a couple of the QT options, and *I think* that's what did the trick. In player preferences I set it to automatically play QT movies and to use High-quality video playback, and on the Full Screen tab I set all three options to "Fill the Screen." Immediately after that game started running and saving without difficulty.

Glory-Be...;)

And it's the DVD version, too. I run it from the launch icon, not from Galaxy.

Edit: If after you get it running but the game freezes every so often, you'll need to set the cpu affinity to CPU 0 (the first core) *if* you have a multicore cpu--which I'll wager almost everyone does these days. I use Process Lasso, and use the watchdog option to set the proper cpu affinity for single-core operation whenever the Riven.exe is detected as a running process. I do this to avoid having to set it manually myself in the Task manager, because it can be a pain to drop out of the game when it's running because it opens up a very low-res screen that renders the manual process a pain, imo (640x480--it does it automatically--no need to force the res in the Win10 exe's compatibility property tab.) You can also set Process Lasso to run only when you want it to (eg, before you start Riven) instead of having it run all the time. Right now this is the only game I own which requires me to do this. Riven is quite nice once you get it running...!
