gwelty: [Edit2: OK, I got all video crashing to stop, so now it runs perfectly. Go to C:\GOG Games\Riven - The Sequel to Myst, where the game is installed, right-click Riven.exe, choose Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and uncheck *all* compatibility mode checkboxes, under "Compatibility mode," "Settings," and "Privilege Level". Do this again under "Change settings for all users". Click OK to save your changes. Now run Riven (through Gog Galaxy if you have it, or directly if you don't). When I did this, all crashing stopped.
Doing that fixed the game for me as well.

Great! Crowd-sourced troubleshooting for the win! ;-)
It was hell on earth getting QuickTime 7.7 to work on Windows 7 (had to install itunes), but once I did this worked beautifully for me and now I'm enjoying a great game. Probably saved me an hour of time.

Thank you so much!

No problem. I'm glad it worked!
For some reason Apple website does not offer Quicktime 7.7 for me, only 7.6.

Also I checked the GDI box in Quicktime settings and unchecked all boxes in Riven compatibility tab - now the game does not load most of the times and still often hangs.

I also couldn't start Riven, but I was able to fix it: I've downloaded the game setup file and installed it manually (NOT through GOG Galaxy). It still wasn't working, so I installed QuickTime 7.7.9 and disabled some compatibility options (only left Compatibility Mode with Windows XP SP2 and "Run this program as an administrator" enabled), and now it's working fine.

gwelty: Of course, it now locks up when I click on the manhole cover on the telescope device just outside the starting area. I think I'm about ready to give up on playing this game for nostalgia! (I played it back when it came on 5 or 6 CDs.)
The one at the very beginning, which has five buttons? I'm not having this problem, I can click on the buttons and everything... Maybe it happens because you've installed through GOG Galaxy?

Oh, I've read on another forum a post from a user who just finished Riven in developer build ScummVM. So I'll play it in dev build of ScummVM too and suggest it to other people.

The compatibilty trick you gave worked for me too..

I had the very same problem.
I killed the exe, did someting else, went back here, this time it worked (I don't know what to do though, it's my first timeplaying Riven). I went to the path open the door , tried to go into that door... and the game hanged just like the first time with the manhole...

LucasJSR: Myst Masterpiece and Real Myst load and play just fine. Operating system is Windows 10. Tried compatability modes with Xp and Vista, still no go. diownoaded QT Lite 4.1.0 and Quicktime 7.7.9 and ran as admin with no change. Contacted Tech Support.

Have you installed it through GOG Galaxy or manually? If you installed the game through GOG Galaxy, try uninstalling it and reinstalling manually.

OK thanks I'll try that

Whinis: I installed riven on my computer and every time I attempt to launch it I get a quick blackscreen and the go back to desktop. I have been unable to get past this. Changing compatibility settings does nothing, attempting to run in a window such as dxwnd also just leads to a blackscreen (without it ever launching in a window)
avatar
gwelty: I had this problem on my Win7 64-bit machine running Gog Galaxy Beta. Launch Riven, get black screen for a few moments, then it quits to desktop. What I did was uninstall the "QT Lite" program that the Riven installer installs, and install just the "QT essential files" during a custom install of the latest Quicktime from Apple (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/). The problem is that the QT Lite program is only QuickTime 7.6, but I read in another thread here at GOG that Riven needs 7.7, which is what the Apple website supplies.

So I updated to QuickTime 7.7, and the game runs fine, plays the videos, etc.

Of course, it now locks up when I click on the manhole cover on the telescope device just outside the starting area. I think I'm about ready to give up on playing this game for nostalgia! (I played it back when it came on 5 or 6 CDs.)

[Edit: more info here: http://www.gog.com/support/riven_the_sequel_to_myst/crashing_video_playback_issues_or_other_visual_glitches]

[Edit2: OK, I got all video crashing to stop, so now it runs perfectly. When I did this, all crashing stopped.

So to summarize: update QuickTime to 7.7, Choose "Safe mode (GDI only)" under "Video" under the "Advanced" tab of the QuickTime Control Panel, and finally uncheck all compatibility checkboxes in the Properties for Riven.exe. At the very least, this works for me on a Win7 64-bit machine.]
This worked for me too, thanks. A word of advice to anybody using dual monitors - I had to change to using only one or the display was half way between the two.
Am I forced to install Apple's QuickTime? QuickTime Alternative seems to indeed lag behind and is no longer in development. I've had a negative experience with Apple's Windows software as well.
I downloaded QuickTime from the official site and and the game succesfully launched

For people just coming to check:

I'm running on 64 bit Win 7, and here's what I had to make it work:

- Downloading the install file from the GOG website, NOT GOG Galaxy. (This was the game-changer for me.)
- Quicktime is currently installed in version 7.7. (Quicktime Lite is not installed.)
- I have the most recent DirectX version.
- Game is running in the default compatibility mode. (I have fiddled some with this tho. You may need to turn stuff off.)
OK, glad to report I now have Riven running perfectly on Win10x64, Preview Build 16273, on a RX-480 8GB running 17.8.2 Crimsons...! What a difference a day makes...!

The remarkable thing is that it's running perfectly with *no compatibility settings* on Riven.exe except for Run as Admin and DPI scaling set to "Application"...!

Additionally I have uninstalled QT Lite 4.1.0 completely and instead have installed by itself QT 7.7.9.xx--the latest and last version from Apple, available on their site. I changed a couple of the QT options, and *I think* that's what did the trick. In player preferences I set it to automatically play QT movies and to use High-quality video playback, and on the Full Screen tab I set all three options to "Fill the Screen." Immediately after that game started running and saving without difficulty.

Glory-Be...;)

Edit: If after you get it running but the game freezes every so often, you'll need to set the cpu affinity to CPU 0 (the first core) *if* you have a multicore cpu--which I'll wager almost everyone does these days. I use Process Lasso, and use the watchdog option to set the proper cpu affinity for single-core operation whenever the Riven.exe is detected as a running process. I do this to avoid having to set it manually myself in the Task manager, because it can be a pain to drop out of the game when it's running because it opens up a very low-res screen that renders the manual process a pain, imo (640x480--it does it automatically--no need to force the res in the Win10 exe's compatibility property tab.) You can also set Process Lasso to run only when you want it to (eg, before you start Riven) instead of having it run all the time. Right now this is the only game I own which requires me to do this. Riven is quite nice once you get it running...!
