So I on a whim decided to get this game. I don't know a single thing about Myst besides the fact that it's an old, hard, puzzle game.

I started the game up and everything was fine until I had to click on the book, then everything went to shit. It just had a bunch of weird overlaying graphics and stuttered until after 2 minutes of clicking around a basically frozen screen I ended up on a dock.

Once again everything went smoothly until I tried to open a door. Then the game basically froze and then worked at maybe 1 frame every 3 seconds. I just quit after about 30 seconds.

I know people have these problems with old games on new computers, so is there any possible way to fix this?

I've got windows 7, 8g ram and 1t hardrive. It's a wiped clean handmedown computer so I really know nothing about graphics card or anything.

I hope this problem can be fixed, I was kind of looking forward to trying out these notoriously hard puzzles. Otherwise, thank god GOG has a 30 day money back thing.

I don't have the answer myself, but I think that the first question is likely this: which version of Myst did you get? Myst: Masterpiece Edition, RealMyst, or RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition?
I'v have had the exact same problem running RealMyst on vista. Try different compatibility settings (for me it's windows XP that does the job) and if that doesn't solve it, go to the installation folder in the explorer and open the setup. You will know immediately when you solved the issue, because the start of the game with the book now works smoothly and when you turn around on the docks the severe lag is gone.
I tested for a bit. If I turn off compatibility mode I get lag for days, if turn it back on the game is fine again. As far as I can tell that should solve your problem. Good luck :)
I'm having the same problem. I purchased RealMyst, am running Windows 7 64 Bit and my game Lags and then eventually force quits. It doesnt Lag on the dock too bad, mostly when I try to go into the wooden 6 sided room with the shelves.

I've never had a problem with any other GOG game so I'm guessing it's a OS compatibility issue.. maybe if enough people seek support over it they'll try to fix it? I'd really like to be able to play this game.
