Nooo! I really love this game and was looking forward to playing it on my new computer. When I open it, a smallish box appears in the top left corner of my screen, and then my computer tells me it's stopped working. I saw that there was another thread on this problem, but I did everything that was suggested there and it still doesn't work. Help!

Have you already installed the older DirectX 9 on your system:

If it still doesn't work, don't install the game into "Program Files" folder and try running it as Administrator (right-click the game's shortcut => Run as ..) and try Compatibility Modes (right-click the game's shortcut => Properties => Compatibility tab)

I've done all that... :(

Edit: Actually, I don't think I've done the old DirectX. How do I do that?

Install this:

It will complete your system with all older components from DirectX 9, which are missing on Windows 8 by default.
Okay, I don't know if I did that right, but it's still not working.

Then it's probably a QuickTime problem. Try this:
1. Uninstalling your current version of QuickTime (Control Panel => Programs and Features)
2. Install QuickTime 7 (the latest version)
3. In QuickTimes control panel change the video mode to "Safe mode (GDI only)"
You find QuickTime's control panel in your system's Control Panel => QuickTime (on 64-bit Windows you must click the "View x86 Control Panel Icons" button on the left side of the Control Panel window before the QuickTime icon appears)

If this doesn't fix your problem, you can try using an older version of QuickTime (uninstall the current one before)
(in QuickTime 6 the Safe mode setting is found in the Video Settings section in the drop-down menu)
GOG provides a download for QuickTime 6.52.

Myst works fine on Windows 8, I tried it when I had Windows 8 and it works 100% on Windows 8.1 too (my current system)

The only issue with Myst is its reliance on QuickTime, and you have to have it installed. I'm using QuckTime 7.7.4

Windows 8.1 is amazing for old games, runs pretty much anything - it's even more compatible than Windows 7.
