I had given up ever playing Riven again. I played it back when it was first released, Win 95 (I think). By the time I'd played Exile, Riven wouldn't play any more. I'd mournfully consigned it to the realms of great but obsolete software. It pained me because although it's crude by modern standards, it's a masterpiece nonetheless.
I've recently bought a grunty new computer, and I wondered whether a clean install would work. So I went online to research compatibility issues. Lo and behold, I discovered a post recommending this site because the download of this game works whereas the various CD and DVD iterations of the Myst universe are flaky at best on modern equipment. So I downloaded it -- hey, you can't argue with the price -- and to my amazement and joy the game booted no problems.
Of course it's not as beautiful because it's been interpolated up to cope with a higher resolution screen, and the 16-bit render is less than state-of-the-art. And the sound is a bit low-res.
But I don't care. I thought I'd never be able to explore the worlds of Myst again. And a bonus: I don't have to change to a new CD every time I get in a mag-lev!
