Fiddly controls -> fast uninstall. And I still haven't worked out why I couldn't do damage to the melee guy in the tutorial.

Basically the blade is just as useless as the mount.

It takes some time to master just how far away thing are and how long your blade is. A lot of times when you swing, you're not connecting in 3D space (I suppose a 3D version would be neat!).

Nonetheless, this is not a game for everyone. TONS of people don't like it. Probably more don't like it than do. But those that do like it LOVE it. I found the game to be spectacular fun. But I can't begrudge anyone who doesn't like it. It is very clunky and doesn't have a whole lot of controls.

I like that GOG gave it away for free so that you can try it and if you love it, you can get the other stuff. But if you don't love it, then you can move on to games you do love.

The controls are a piece of cake.

You hold the LMB -> move the mouse inversely to the attack you wish to perform -> then release LMB.

i.e

Hold LMB -> Move mouse from right to left -> release LMB -> character swings from left to right

Hold LMB -> Move mouse from bottom to top -> release LMB -> character does an overhead attack

The trick to archery is to not hold the left mouse too long - the strain makes you inaccurate.

Release LMB when the three parts of the target cursor are closest.

It's one of the most satisfying parts of the game to land a headshot whilst riding at speed.


Successful attacks require precise timing, angles, factoring in distance and for lancing - attacking into the space where you expect them to be.

Yes! Or at a ridiculous distance and you're just wasting an arrow while they make their charge.

I understand the OP. The controls are very different than most games that have nifty motion-capture button-mashing combinations to get the work done. I like them both in their own way, but for a game the strives for realism, M+B's controls are the only controls I can imagine working for it.

I was like Genghis Khan at one time - picking off the lowly peasants with a bow in that cool black metal armor with a fast charger.

Not exactly a fair fight when they're on foot, of course.

But then they should've bought a horse! ;)

I took a good year hiatus and then came back to it. I was the same way. I'd easily go 1v50 and not think twice about it. When I came back to it, 1v1 was too much for me.

But it all comes back after you get a few points on your character and you remember how to swing a weapon.

I think Chivalry's controls would work just fine, I find them easier to grasp while still rewarding skill.
I'm sure M&B veterans will disagree with me, and I hope that one day I could be one of them, the idea behind M&B is so tempting to me but the controls get in the way of me enjoying the game. I still try it every once in a while, hopefully I'll get it eventually.
