I just started M&B. It's a little bit rough but I like it. It remembers me the good old days, when game designers discovered new mechanics instead of walking the same paths as so many other before (not to mention of writing of part #2, part #3 etc).

Are there any mods recommended (GUI- or mechanic improvements such as less notifications, no new content or better graphics/resolution)?

If you don't want to change the vanilla experience too much then 'Diplomacy 4.litdum' is a solid bet. That is what I'm using, and it's mostly quality of life improvements, extra diplomacy options and some graphical tweaks. It's pretty great.
For a more complete overhaul type of deal held in high regard there is the 'floris' mod and the '1275' mod.
