I'm interested in trying this game and would rather not have to play via steam. A recent review indicates the gog version is older than what's on steam. Is it not possible to patch the gog version? Is there any reason to avoid the gog version?

It's always the same version. Steam version get updates through Steam app and GOG version gets updates through GOG Galaxy app.
