Both Games complain about 16bit color display.
MR2 goes past it anyway but then refuse to start 'cus the damn CD is not in the drive????

I seriously have come to expect MUCH better than this from GOG.com

Im very disappointed!

I just bought the games yesterday and nothing like that happens to me. Are you running them via the GOG supplied launcher?
Yeah, it states "16 bit mode required !" and gives the options cancel, retry, ignore. None of them works. Hmm... maybe it's due to me running it within a VirtualBox (Windows XP)?

Ps: Moto Racer 2 just flashes the screen and is gone... hum...

Pps: Yup.. Moto Racer 1 runs with Win7x64. But Moto Racer 2 shows the same behavior. Screen flashes and I'm back to my desktop.. hum..

Ppps: MR2 starts with DirectX disabled - I can see the title screen, then the game crashes with "MotoRacer 2 GOG.com Fix has stopped working"...

I got the CD issue too, my laptop has no CD Drive ...
So I installed WinCDEmu and a small GNU/Linux distro (slitaz) to get a fake CD Drive.

But then, the game is dead slow ! Totallly unplayable !
This might only work in win 8, but see attached for the compatibility settings I use for moto racer. Specifically, the "reduced color mode" setting.

I also have the "Please insert moto racer 2 CD-ROM" when I try to start a local game.
GOG.com, no DRM ?

Yep, got the same issue here. Windows 7.

Have you tried the 30day moneyback scheme?

No because it does this only on my Linux box, when I install it on my windows partition it works well. But I don't want a refund since I got it for 2$ and GOG support only Windows and Mac, so it won't be fair.

I was just pointing the fact that there is still some DRM inside this game

Are you really sure it's DRM then? It sounds like the launcher might turn a cd image into a virtual drive that the program understands. For whatever reason, this image doesn't work when you try to run it through wine. Not necessarily DRM

Yep, I got it for $2 too. Actually thinking about it, I was trying under wine too! It works on my windows 7 partition. Silly me. I might look to see if there is a cd image file in the install though, I'm curious to try and get it working under wine.

This game doesn't use an image but the original disc had CD-DA music; games using CD-DA music try to specifically initialise this legacy function so may have problems if no drive is found. This is separate from a disc check, if any.

GOG's system requirements specifically state "CD/DVD drive (physical or emulated)" because of this known issue.

Hi there,

I was responding to the DRM question.

It looks like this forum is a mix of all the Moto Racing games. I've only got number 2 just now.

The min requirements on Moto Racing 2 are:
Minimum system requirements: Windows XP or Windows Vista, 1 GHz Processor (1.4 GHz recommended), 256MB RAM (512 recommended), 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended), Mouse, Keyboard.

No mention of physical or emulated drives

On the Moto Racing 1 it is:
Minimum system requirements: Windows XP or Windows Vista, 1 GHz Processor (1.4 GHz recommended), 256MB RAM (512 recommended), 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended), Mouse, Keyboard, CD/DVD drive (physical or emulated).

Check for yourself - if you don't believe me!

I'm not grumbling, like I say, it works fine in Windows 7. The linux geek in me wants to get this working though. Of course, I could spend the time actually playing the game! The old cd's used to have track 1 as a data item, and the other tracks as cd music. I'll look into it after christmas, as I'm pretty sure Linux users could set up cdemu for something similar. I'm wondering if an old style cd with data track 1 and music tracks would work.

GOG noted the CD issue with the first game because it was an issue for Windows users, but this apparently isn't an issue for Moto Racer 2.

The behaviour difference under Linux is will be due to some gap in Wine's implementation. This isn't a widely-used feature; CD-DA playback hasn't been used in new games since the late '90s, not all games from that era used it, and those that did won't necessarily check for it in a way that blocks access to the game if it isn't detected correctly.

Games with CD-DA playback support will play music from any random audio CD in the CD-ROM 0 drive (after passing the disc check, if applicable), so the primary issue is getting the drive to show up correctly.
