I decided to play MK3 which was my favorite game when i was a kid. However the game is very difficult for me now. Maybe because I am old. So I tried to change the difficulty to "wuss" but it doesnt change anything. I changed it to most difficult same result. The game difficulty just doesnt change. The AI plays exactly the same each time. Also I tried to change the ladder i play from novice to master (or whatever it is ) that you challange more players. I managed to beat 3 players but i die at 4th. I dont want to break my laptop's keyboard :))

So question. Is there a way to fix the difficulty and make it easier?

Tnx.
Engin.

Ok. I searched quiet a bit and learned that the difficulty doesnt work in the first 3 Mortal Kombat games. It works only starting from MK4 which is exactly what i am experiencing. I am writing here just so anyone else has the same problem.
My experience is that the difficulty "works" but doesn't change that much. AI does mostly the same things both on Easy and on Hard.
In other words, one can say that "Easy" setting is Hard, and "Hard" setting is in fact Ridiculously Hard.

The first game I was able to beat after throwing in a cheat for Unlimited Continues.
The second game I was able to beat thanks to doing the same AND using state saves in Dosbox. Otherwise , it's hard to imagine how a casual player like me can win two rounds with last two insane bosses. One round - it happens, thanks to some luck I guess (and playing with Kitana). So - win one round, save in Dosbox and play again and again from this save to win a second round.

And I am still playing around with the third one. Again, it's very tough, I have real trouble to input any good combos. I even bought a fighting arcade stick, but I can't get used to it - somehow it feels so slow/clunky in terms of character movement and jumping.

I really, REALLY wish these games weren't so insanely hard, because I do like the setting, animations and fast gameplay. Is it really so hard to create an AI, that adapt to how the player is performing? So it would create a challenge but wouldn't destroy the player right off the bat? Anyone knows a fighting game, where this works?
Well, the arcade versions had unlimited continues as long as you had coins, so I feel no shame in turning on Free Play :p

For MK3, the difficulty settings appear to troll you. The easier settings are hyper aggressive, but if you set it to the hardest, you'll find them standing still waiting to be combo'd. So mess with the harder settings to find something you're more comfortable with.

thats actually kinda common in older games that required skill the devs or maybe the higher ups decide to have the diffuciltys be not as the game claims it is
