If possible, please support ALSA as the backend for audio in Linux.
As of now, it seems Pulseaudio is required. But if ALSA were used instead, then both ALSA and Pulseaudio should work fine (unless I'm mistaken on the purpose of alsa-lib for Pulseaudio).
Or, as someone else pointed out to me, utilize projects such as this one: http://www.portaudio.com/ or SDL2
