I didn't think I'd enjoy the game this much. It's quite additive.
The game is not hard to learn, but it does take a lot of trial and error to master.
Penumbra for example can be seriously OP if you have right card to back it up in the initial hand. I've had the Champion eat enough with the right unit/spell cards to get over 800+ Damage at the Seraph stage.
Of course, I've also experienced some tough instances of utter failure too lol.
Here's one example:
I played the Penumbra Champion (Umbra) and my ally was the Awoken.
I entered a battle with an angel that could move freely between floors. Unfortunately, I was having a bad run of luck in acquiring good units and spells. The boss was lucky (or me unlucky lol) to have the Melee debuff ability. To make matters worse, they also had something that boosted their damage by 1 per enemy unit getting hit I think.
This meant that the boss quickly got their damage up and and the weakness debuff meant a double attack that none of my units (including the Champion) had the health to withstand. I play the game for fun, not really for the challenge, since it's kind of my warmup game before playing the longer games.
Disclaimer:
So I do have the Restart mod (part of the dev package on their site that works for the GOG version and doesn't require Steam to download) and it allowed me to restart the battle, though with the same exact initial hand. This allowed me me relax a bit and not stress out. After all, I'm playing the game to de-stress lol. Just to be clear, I many runs without any mods before using it. So a lot of failed runs early on and even later on still.
Anyway, on this battle, I died quickly and often. I restarted and tried different combos and different, but no matter what I did I kept failing cause that melee debuff killed my front line units in the same round. So after several tries, I got the idea to use the Morsels as the front line units. Not sure why I didn't think of it before.
These Morsels, as many know are incredibly weak on their own. There're meant to boost the front units after all. So now I kept popping these guys in front every chance I got. Of course, the downside was that my regular units hardly got to eat any of them, since the boss and the enemy units keep quickly killing them. The one mercy I got was that in this battle, the enemy did not have multiattack or any other crazy boost.
Well, color me surprised, it was crazy slow progress, but I actually managed to kill off the non-Champion units. There were some dicey moments when I almost didn't have enough Morsels. The final fight with the boss was pretty iffy to say the least.
But somehow I managed to defeat it, though it took a lot of the poor little guys getting sacrificed in the front to make it happen. Funny think is, I think it was one of the remaining Morsels that delivered the killing blow to the boss. Avenging his fallen comrades before they could even be eaten, poetic justice maybe? :)
So yeah, it's a fun and addictive game, but can try your patience when your luck is just really bad. I have a feeling I'll be playing this for a long time. One bad thing, I don't have the DLC yet and I missed the sale by mistake, so I will have to wait for another sale.
