I am replaying The Secret of Monkey Island and I am at the point where you sword-fight the pirates in Melee Island to learn the insults and their answers. I am asking myself if there is a way to predict what pirates will help me learn the answers to the more unusual insults -not that I haven't completed this trial several times before... but I am thinking about how the game was designed.

It may just be anecdotal evidence, but I have had a streak of "ugly pirates" who don't even know the most basic insults and are just "shaking, shaking". While the "bloodthirsty" pirates seem to know more sophisticated insults and answers. The same goes to the pirates with the fancy hats -again, it could be just be confirmation bias.

Is there a pattern on what pirates know which insults? Or is it just random?
