I noticed on my machine that the subs were being run off of the screen, and could not find a way with the GOG version to increase the resolution of the game to something higher than 640x480, and I came across a tool to do so-

https://quickandeasysoftware.net/software/emi-launcher

If using this, you'll be able to create a patched EXE that can increase the resolution of the game and even get it to run in other ratios - the only downside I've seen is that you'll notice "broken" graphics with seams crossing through different parts of the 2D elements, and while a movie is playing that it will not be centered if not playing in a 4:3 ratio.
Yes, the EMI Launcher is capable of that, and slightly more.

However, I think I've found it a bit more enjoyable when using dgVoodoo. It's not stretching the act transitions, and it has no issues with videos. Take a look at the DirectX tab in the control panel.
There are comprehensible instructions on that page, and I've also talked a little bit about it here:

Thanks for the hint. I got good results with dgVoodoo
To get rid of the rectangular artifacts when scaling, I had to disable filtering.
However, using dgvoodoo I was not able to scale the image to 4:3 full screen, it always got stretched.
So I went to the Nvidia graphics settings and set the option to override the applications scale mode, that did the trick.
It's a shame there is no 1440x1080 graphics mode for old applications to avoid post-scaling completely.

You should be able to type that into dgVoodoo manually, on the DirectX tab in the resolution dropdown (instead of selecting one of the predefined options).
...unless you meant something else :)

Most of the backgrounds are bitmap data, videos are 640x480, and the font is also bitmap as far as I recall.
Also, 1440x1080 has an 1.333 AR, so that's actually 4:3... The same as 640x480.
Now, pixel aspect ratio (PAR) may not be 1:1... resulting in a longer screen capable of the 4:3 AR.

1440x1080 is not listet, since it's not a standard resolution. It would be the best resolution to play a 4:3 game on a 1080p screen without scaling errors.
As it is, I have to use 1280x960. Scaling 960 -> 1080 causes a lot of rouding errors, hardly any pixel is where it's supposed to be. Of course the image still looks good, but I hate doing that.
And I'm saying you can use 1440x1080.

1. The way I described above or
2. By opening the dgVoodoo.conf, finding the [DirectX] section and entering your resolution in the resolution row, like:
Resolution = 1440x1080 (I think the correct way is actually h:1440, v:1080)

If you're having issues after that, you can go to the top of the file in [General] and select another ScalingMode.

ah, I misread earlier. I'll try that this evening

THANKS MAN!! I was going nuts - I hate it when the aspect ratio is not adhered to. That setting finally worked, thanks again!!
