Network multiplay can be achieved using hamachi VPN (free & tested) DPlay is acting up on windows 10. it can communicate etc.. right up to the game deployment.. then it crashes on win 10 but not win 7.
However.. the reason... on win 10 there already is a dplay version active. However.. this game was released on W95. and that dplay version is too old. So to get this working, you need to go into (on win10) control panel -> programs & features -> turn windows features on or off -> legacy components -> directplay (uncheck the radio box)
then you also need these files from an old version of directx that still have these files:
(simply download an older version of the directx setup, and unpack it)
You'll need these files..
DPWSOCK.DLL
DPSERIAL.DLL
DPLAY.DLL
and copy them to this folder:
c:\Windows\SysWOW64\
Doing this will make it communicate.
However.. you will need a program like Hamachi (found here: https://www.vpn.net) it is free for up to 5 people networks. This will create a VPN LAN between your computers. so playing will be like a local LAN. This can be used to play older games like DOOM etc.. in network as well. as it also supports older protocols like IPX etc.. (since win10 doesn't have ipx to install, you can try http://www.solemnwarning.net/ipxwrapper/ and see if this solves the problem for you. It uses udp to mimic IPX instead) Otherwise this guide might help: https://help.logmein.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/Does-Hamachi2-support-IPX-connections-en1
You might have to try which of you who can create the game, and be seen by the others. Because if you play between win10 & win7 I found that the win7 user had to set the game up, or the win7 players can't see the win10 game. Don't know why this is... feel free to give advice on this.
Regarding the high sound.. set the music to low etc.. save.. and exit the game entirely. This is important. It won't save otherwise. Start it up again.. and if done right.. your sound levels should now be better.
Happy hunting :)
p.s don't forget to check your firewalls :)
