Hi all
I've been playing WOX for quite some time now and have been enjoying it greatly but appear to have a problem with one of my characters.
When I started up the game for the first time I just used the default party. Everyone has been leveling up fine and working without a problem apart from my half-ork fellow. He doesn't seem to be able to actually hit anything. Every time I use the attack function when he is highlighted, no hit is registered and the cursor highleghts my next character.
All of his stats seem fine and his condition is good. Also, his accuracy is higher than some of my other characters and they seem to attack fine.
Any ideas? I really don't want to have to get rid of this guy and make a new lvl 1 to replace him as they will spend all of their time dead and useless.
On the other hand, what is more useless than a fighter that seems unable to fight.

He's a knight, right?
I assume he's trained up to the same level as your other characters. Check his equipment and make sure it hasn't been broken. It's easy to overlook - I've caught myself wandering around with broken gear before. Also check to make sure you haven't been unnaturally aged, though I would think your stats would have quite obviously dropped through the floor if you'd been aged far enough to make a difference.
If all that checks out, you might just need a better weapon. If everyone's using emerald and diamond gear and the knight is using a Leather Halberd, he'll definitely be falling behind.

Please clarify - He NEVER EVER hits? Or he just seems to not hit nearly as often as he should?
If he just doesn't hit often, it could be his equipment. Some materials (like leather and bronze for example) provide negatives to the "to hit" rolls for your character. i.e. It makes your character less likely to hit.
If he absolutely *never* hits, then I would think there is a good chance your character is bugged. If you're far enough along that you don't want to add a new character, I'd consider looking into a character editor. Not to edit him necessarily mind you. It just could be that resaving the file outside of the game could correct the issue.
Keep in mind that by the time you've beat Clouds of Xeen your characters will be level 20ish, and by the time you beat Darkside, you'll be likely level 60ish or more, and by the time you beat the whole combined World of Xeen you'll be well over 100. So killing your character and starting a new one may not be as big of a deal as you think, depending on how far along you are.

He literally never hits.
His age is fine and all of his equipment is good. I even changed his weapon out for other things several times to test him out.
Maybe it is bugged then :( I was hoping that there was an obscure mechanic that I'd missed. Could you please clarify the whole save thing? Not sure what I need to do.
My whole party is about lvl 12-13 so making a new toon wouldn't be too bad but I worry that I've destroyed all the easy to kill stuff already and I think he'll be instakilled so often it would be better to just go with an empty slot.
Any further suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.
On Edit: I've just booted this up and created a new character. By walking a few steps outside of Vertigo and finishing off one or two quests that I'd gathered the goods for I've already taken him to level 8! I would still like to figure this problem out, however, so any help would be appreciated. I've stacked lots of accuracy benefits into my abandoned character to try and resolve the problem and I would rather not loose them.

Seems like your character is blocking all the time.
Did you try pressing the "a" key for attacking ?

Indeed. seems like he's hitting 'f' for autofight. Next combat, when he's highlighted, hit 'o' and see what his autofight is set to. I would guess defend as well.
Hi All;
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for this problem, but I encountered the exact same problem in MM3. I was going through the maze from Hell (characters ~lvl 120ish) and had buffed my paladin and knight with heroism, power shield, and Holy Bonus. I then noticed that neither of them were hitting any enemies ever. I checked all of their equipment and even swapped some but had zero luck. To make sure it wasn't just tough enemies I entered the arena and couldn't even hit low-level characters. I tried re-loading but I had saved after the problem occurred. Anyway, long story short, by plain old resting (sleeping) then the next day everything was fine and I was able to hit enemies again. My only other thought for trying to get around the problem would have been to get a character trainer and check the To Hit levels of my characters in case a bug had set it to some low/negative value. You might want to try that for MM4. I'm just starting MM4 right now, and is it just me, or does it look a lot worse then MM3???
Good luck, and I hope you can fix your problem
With regards to the blocking suggestion, would he be blocking if I used the attack button on the right hand panel (first button) to attack? That's how I've always done it and my other fighters work fine.
Also, to save starting a new topic, can someone tell me how to reverse premature aging? One of my characters is 46 and I've now idea how it happened!

Ok, a bit of a spolier, so stop reading if you don't really want to know
Once you get into the pyramid near Baywatch you can raise the sunken island just east of Baywatch if you have the right password. There will then be a fountain on the island which will return any characters back to their proper age.
PS. As far as I know, if you're hitting the "A" button or using the attack button then it doesn't matter what the auto-fight settings are...

The first button in the upper left corner is "fight", and will use whatever their autofight is set to. Attack is the one in the upper right corner, and will always attack.
The button in the lower left is option, and will allow you to set the autofight (alternatively, press O on the keyboard)
When that character comes up again, click that lower left button, or hit O, and see what the autofight is set to. Also try hitting the upper right button, or pressing A on the keyboard, see if any of that makes a difference
Thanks for all the information everyone, very helpfull. I'm just making a passing visit but will try out that attacking business tomorrow. I've probably set it to defend like an idiot!

The heroism spell grants 1 level per level to the target in terms of physical attack power, so if you cast a level 129 heroism at a level 128 character for example you get a level 1 (128+129-256=1, if you get higher than 255 256 is subtracted) character in MM3 who has of course trouble hitting anything with one lousy attack per round.
This problem doesn't appear in MM4+5 where even a level 305 character gets the full benefit from a level 305 heroism spell.
I also liked the MM4 graphics less than the MM3 ones, they are more detailed but I don't like the dirtier style that much.

That is definitely the correct explanation! I had figured that it was the heroism spell that was causing the problem but didn't realize it was because of going over 255. Thanks for the explanation.

*255.
Can't go higher than 255 or 256, I forget which. I tried, believe me I tried, but nope. You can train up to 200 at Olympus and then use the various +level rewards scattered around the world, but you cannot go higher than 255 or 256 (it's been... a while, sorry).
[/nitpick]
Also, thanks for that insight. I've never gotten terribly far into MM3 (the graphic style is just too different from 4/5 which I grew up with) and next time I try I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
You can have a level 305 character in WoX. The normal cap is 255, but there's a well which adds 50 levels temporarily.
