So I just started up World of Xeen and I like some of the pre-gens, based on their stats...but I'd like to change their names/portraits. Any way I can do this? (Note: I'm not above using an Editor of some kind to do it. I found a couple old ones online, but they're incompatible with Win7, even when I try to run them in Compatibility Mode as Win95.)
On a sidenote...are these the worst looking Dwarf portraits EVER??!! Where are their beards?! There was a great looking Dwarf in MM3 with a helm & flaming red beard!! These Dwarves would be shamed to stand before Moradin or Reorx, all clean-shaven & whatnot!

Names and stats can be easily changed using hex editor. I don't know the digits for portraits however. You would have to mess around with savegame and try to find them yourself.
If you cannot find working savegame editor, the workaround would be creating custom characters (with desired portraits) at the Inn, and then hack their stats in hex editor to mirror these of pre-gen chars.
I was hoping it wouldn't involve a hex editor. I'm just no good with them, lol.
If anyone knows of a wysiwyg editor for Xeen (like the one I found & posted for MM1), PLEASE let me know. Obviously I can roll up my own characters if need be, its just a pain in the butt. ;-)

Are you familiar with Universal Game Editor?
Easier than hex editor would be UGE module for Darkside (it should work with WoX as well); it works under DOSBox (so problem with Win7 can be solved this way) and allows to change most aspects of party characters (no portraits though).

you can change the names with fairly easily with a hex editor, but you can't change the portraits.
The "character" file contains 24 entries, one for each portrait. When you create a character with a specific portrait, that character is saved into the file at that specific position. It's not some variable you can just change; in order to change the portrait you would have to load the file and move all the stats from one character to another. It's not easy and just not worth it.

That was one of 2 different editors I tried, but it never occurred to me to try it under DosBox. I'll have to try that when I get home.
Thanks. :-)
