I'm having some issues using the menu in Might and Magic 1. It tells me that I need to use the # key to proceed to the town, but I'm using a laptop that doesn't have that key. Using shift + 3 doesn't work. Does anybody have any ideas?

It's not asking you to hit the # key, it's asking you to hit a number (denoted by the character #) of the town you want to go to. Just push 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. Since you're just starting, you'll only have characters in town 1, so just press 1.
