Started playing M&M 3 rather than just noodle about in it as I did way back on the Amiga.

I know there are weapon stat lists out there but is there any way in game to tell which weapons are better than what you are currently using ?

Only way to do it as far as I know is to use "Identify" at blacksmiths.

Yes, thanks, just found that :)
Each type of material confers a specific bonus or penalty to a weapon or armor's base stats. Wood and leather are the worst weapons. I'm sure you could find tables with exact info. They exist for MM 4 & 5 at least. That way, you can identify stuff in the field.

I'm also confused, how are these people crafting wooden chain mail and leather longswords?
Also in MM3 materials always give AC bonuses to gear, even tiny things like Rings. They changed that in Xeen I think since it made no sense, but you could have like one ring of every material (Silver, Steel, Gold, Emerald, etc) and the AC bonuses would stack like crazy.

I laughed my butt off the first time I found some "Leather leather armor." It sold for less than my "Leather armor" because it was apparently made of inferior materials :P

Honestly though I used the clue book for this and only this purpose (ID'ing gear). Pull up the PDF that came included and hit CTRL F and hit type 'bronze' or 'flamberge' to go the the right pages without exposing yourself to spoilers. And if you are lucky, it won't freeze up for several seconds every so often and say "color scheme changed to windows 7 basic" while you're doing it >_<
Don't sell your leather leather armor, keep it! Leather leather armor gives the same defensive boost as leather armor, but it costs less to repair. (Leather weapons, however, are abysmal.)
