I don't know if anyone else is having the same trouble I was with MM9 but figured I'd post this in case it helps someone.
I was having trouble getting MM9 started--the screen would go black and then a Windows error would pop and the game would crash. None of the fixes I found in the forums worked. Finally I tried switching my resolution back to 1024x768 and that fixed the issue.
I haven't tried other resolutions but there are probably others that will work as well. I did try the "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution" compatibility fix but it didn't help. I was running 1680x1050 on an AMD chipset under Windows 7 32 bit.
