Hey all! With the current Ubisoft sale I'm interested in picking up Might and Magic 7 or 8 (leaning towards 8) and was wondering what (if anything) I would be missing out on if I choose 8. I'm leaing towards 8 because it's easier for me to read the text (at least in the images) but I hear 7 is the best out of the series. Just what exactly is better in 7 compared to 8? Would it be a world of a difference?
Both have the Arcomage minigame, so you can't go wrong with either of them :D

On a more serious note, I have only played 6-7, so I can't give you a real in-depth comparison, but I think the most significant difference between the two is that in MM7 you generate your whole party yourself, and you get to choose from standard fantasy races: humans, elves, dwarves, goblins. In MM8 you only generate one character at the start and then you can recruit four more members during the game. However, MM8 gives you a more "exotic" choice when it comes to races, as you can have minotaurs, vampires, trolls, dragons and the like in your party.
Since I haven't played 8, I don't know if there are any changes to how classes, character development, spells etc. work, so hopefully someone else will be able to give you proper information about that. Both games use the same sort of "semi turn-based" battle system introduced in MM6, which means that by default battles occur in real time, but you can switch to turn-based combat whenever you want to.

ah, thanks for the info :) And cool on the turn based combat! I have difficulty playing these types of games in a realtime/semi-realtime system.
The main differences between the games are:
1. In M&M 8 you create just 1 character, and hire the other 4.
2. M&M 8 is too easy - because *** spoiler *** dragons are just imba. *** spoiler ***

Other than that, they are pretty much the same gameplay wise.

I would personally go with 7 - as I found the story a bit more interesting and it offers a better challenge (little challenge, not too hard and not too easy for a first timer).

I loved MM7 waaaaaay more than MM8, I just really like to generate my own party and the classes are more straightforward with MM7. Other than that, MM8 is pretty fun, but 7 is not thát hard either and the story is much cooler and you have more impact on the gaming world.
I found the game play and graphics extremely similar but MM7 had a better story. Personally I enjoyed MM6s maps and story the most but I played it years before the others, now it's also on sale I'll have to give it another go.
The character creation isn't really that great in MM8 because you need to know what you want from the start otherwise you waste a heap of experience on a character that does nothing but sit in the pub! Also I found the dragons make the rest of my party look pretty pathectic, the stats they have make the game far too easy and I would recommend avoiding them the first time you play!

Thanks for more input guys :) I'll have to think this over again I guess xD I'll probably end up buying both now.
Yeah, I agree that 7 is the one to choose out of these two.

But, if you can afford it just get both :D
VII is the better game, no contest. While VIII is a totally fine Might and Magic game, you only get to create one character, and the ability to throw some pretty powerful NPCs into your party as soon as you reach Ravenshore really breaks the difficulty and turns the game into a joke from the get-go (though it's still pretty easy even without Dragons or Cauri Blackthorne).

If you're willing to spend... oh an extra $2, the Might and Magic 6-Pack wouldn't be a bad choice either. VI is less friendly and polished than VII, but it's also significantly larger and more ambitious. And that's not even getting into Isles of Terra and World of Xeen, which are worth playing in their own right.
