Hello, long time fan of the series.

I've changed my pc recently and I'm getting the following error when trying to launch MM7:
"There aren't any D3D devices to create"

Tried to do some things that I've found on the forums to solve it and got nothing:
- Run setup and change video configs - I cannot even run the setup, nothing happens, not even when trying to open it as administrator
- install Grey Face patches - nothing changes
- install on another directory that not the program files - it's already installed on another directory
- install DirectX stuff - downloaded and installed all, nothing changes

I don't know if I'm missing something and I'm not that eager to downgrade configs as some people suggested.
My specs now are (if something else is needed, I can add more info):
- Windows 10 Pro
- Intel I7-7700K
- Radeon R9 360

Thank you for your time reading and trying to help me solve this one.
Long live to the might and magic community!
Have a good day!

If you're comfortable using the registry editor, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Wow6432node/Software/New World Computing/Might and Magic VII/1.0

Try changing
2dacceloff to 1
D3D Device to 0
D3DAvailable to 0
Use D3D to 0

If that doesn't help, try tweaking the other way round (i.e. 2dacceloff to 0, rest to 1).
Hey ZFR, thank you for the quick reply.

I tried those changes in the registry and it did change the error I was getting. After changing the "Use D3D to 0" that "There aren't any D3D devices to create" error stopped, but the game still crashed before starting. Tried almost all combinations on the registry with no success.

Then I tried opening the game through that MM7-Rel shortcut on the Might and Magic 7 directory and the game worked. My bad, I didn't see that shortcut and didn't try it before posting. Unfortunately, I cannot change to windowed mode now because it asks for 16-bit color, and windows 10 doesn't have that option. Switched the compatibility mode to run on 16-bit color but all I got was a grey screen when hitting F4. Found an old thread on celestialheaven forum (MMResTool 0.2.5) that kind of was supposed to fix this resolution problem, but it didn't work for me.

Anyway, at least I can run the game now, only cannot do it in a window, which is kind of annoying since I alt+tab a lot to check on places, trainers and stuff on the internet.

Thank you for the reply brother!
I wish you all the best!

Happy it worked. And thanks for coming back and posting the solution.

Try Grayface patch. I think that one allows you to play in Windowed mode.

I have Grayface patch v 2.0 installed, but window mode doesn't work anyway.

Also, there's a MM6/MM7 resolution mod on Grayface's site made by Angel Death. Tried that but it doesn't work too because I think with that mod you could resize the resolution but you have to be able to switch to window mode first.

I don't see a way to play it other than full screen on Windows 10 right now. If someone knows and doesn't mind sharing, please, you're welcome.

Also, cannot mark the post as a solution because it was not what he told me to do that made it work. What worked is written on my own post and I don't have an option to mark my own post as a solution.

You can enable windowed output via the configuration file (*mmcl.ini*)

Oh brother! That's so amazing! And it's something brand new. I'm so happy right now.
Now, that's a solution to the problem!

Thank you for everyone that cared to reply.
Peace and live long and prosper!
Thought I'd correct the link:

And thought I'd add that even @ 640x480 my MM7 mouse isn't working correctly--on the Load Game page, neither mouse nor UI (keyboard) works, and I have to quit via task manager at that point. Win10x64 build 16199.

The mouse issue is a known problem; GrayFace implemented a workaround in his own patch (DisableAsyncMouse I believe is the option) until I solve the problem. You can find a link in the thread on celestialheavens.

I haven't had any other reports of this keyboard issue on Win10 however -- be sure you're not running the game with any compatibility mode settings.
