I thought I'd do an analysis of the voices of the characters who could be in your party, because I think that first impressions can easily be tainted by a particularly jarring voice... and unfortunately, there are a few jarring voices here and there. I'll sort them by race, sex, and number, e.g. DM1 is the voice of the first male dwarf. And to avoid further confusion, I'll write out their "Pick me" sayings at the character creation screen; each voice has two, and no two voices have the same phrases.
HM1: I'm your man. / You want to ride high? Ride with me.
HM2: Pick me. / Tally ho!
HM3: Choose me. / I'm your man.
HM4: Please, pick me. / I am the one you need.
HF1: Pick me! / Don't get me killed!
HF2: Pick me. / What could go wrong?
HF3: Choose me! / Pick me for your party.
HF4: Pick me. / Choose me.
EM1: Pick me! / Come on, pick me!
EM2: Pick me! / Hey, right here, chief!
EF1: Oh, come on! Pick me! Please? / I want in!
EF2: Pick me. / Please, choose me.
DM1: Come on, pick me. / How about me?
DM2: Heh, right here! / I won't let you down!
DF1: Pick me, pick me! / Don't leave home without me.
DF2: Please, pick me. / Pick me! I'll be helpful!
GM1: Pick me! / How about me? I can do it.
GM2: Choose me. / You need a strong warrior, like myself.
GF1: Pick me. / You have to choose me.
GF2: Choose me. / I'm the one you want.
Note as well that the default characters have the GM2, HM4, DF1, and EF1 voices respectively.
I am not familiar with all of these voices; in particular, I have never played a goblin or a female dwarf, nor have I used their voice files.
I'm not particularly familiar with HM1 or HM2, either, but HM3 strikes me as a tough guy ("It's time to fight!"), and HM4 seems rather malicious at times, especially to shopkeepers who insult you.
HF1 is kind of pessimistic, saying things like "Can't we pick a better place to die?" when you enter a dungeon. I don't like that voice very much, and in fact I find HF2's calm confidence ("This doesn't look too dangerous.") much more agreeable. I couldn't say much about HF3 or HF4, though.
EM1 is pretty nondescript, although I think he's the only one who says anything about "just a flesh wound" when he gets hurt. His "hmph" when he identifies weak items is also pretty easy on the ears, although his potential cackle when he identifies strong items is less so.
EM2 is extremely high-pitched and could easily get on one's nerves, in my opinion. Somehow that voice reminds me of Mickey Mouse, and not in a good way.
EF1... Take what I just said about EM2 and multiply it by 10, and you'll get a pretty good idea of how much I dislike EF1. And this is the voice for the default Sorcerer, so perhaps hundreds of gamers have been unwittingly subjected to her whining.
Fortunately, EF2 is pretty much nothing like EF1. Actually, EF2 reminds me a bit of HF2: very calm, fairly quiet... and actually lower in pitch than EM2.
Both of the male dwarf voices are your stereotypical dwarves' voices. Somehow I find DM2 a bit more interesting than DM1, although I do like DM1's "I hope there's some gold in there at least" line.
As I said, I haven't heard any lines from the female dwarves or the goblins aside from the above "Pick me" quotes, although I probably wouldn't like either female dwarf's voice. (DF1 sounds like she has lung cancer, and DF2 sounds like EF1.)
Note that any character can have any voice of the same sex, so you could for example make a male dwarf with the portrait associated with DM1 but the voice of EM2 (although I don't know why anyone would want to).
