Hey all, I decided to try out MM7 today. Unfortunately, it crashes immediately despite my attempts to follow all official and unofficial troubleshooting instructions I've found thus far. This is what I get in the details that follow the crash (besides the classic "There was a problem with yadda yadda yadda and it had to be terminated" message) :

AppName: mm7.exe AppVer: 1.2.1.0 ModName: winmm.dll

ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 Offset: 00010116

Operating System: Win XP Home SP 3.

I can post the whole error report if necessary.

Transcendental: all official and unofficial troubleshooting instructions I've found thus far
Could you elaborate? What exactly have you tried so far?
And besides OS, what's your video card & drivers?
Certainly.

Thus far I've tried several unofficial patches, including the one by GrayFace. I've also tried turning off hardware and 3D sound acceleration via the configuration tool, as well as sliding the sound acceleration bar in dxdiag to no acceleraton. The game executable seems to be set to win 95 compatibility by default, tried playing around with that but for some reason it can't be changed.

Processor: P4 3.06
Video card: Radeon 4650 1GB Drivers: Catalyst 10.12
Sound: SoundMAX Integrated Audio
1.5 GB RAM

Can you modify not executable, but desktop shortcut to disable compatibility mode?
Just tried again. Compatibility mode just pops back no matter what, can't change it. :/

I'll dig up my XP notebook and take a look.
In the meantime, all your drivers ( sound, video) and DirectX 9 (from June 2010) are up to date?

Edit: Okay, re-installed it on XP but nothing is grayed out for me.
Do you have administrative privileges on your user account?

I have administrative privileges, directx and drivers seem to be up to date. I think this might have something to do with SoundMAX integrated audio though, but driver updates or even turning the whole device off doesn't seem to accomplish anything.

Also noticed system volume control has just now also started throwing up winmm.dll module errors and is unresponsive. But other applications and games work perfectly.

Sigh, maybe it's that time again, format: c time. Damnit.
winmm.dll provides low level joystick and audio functions.

Try unplug any joysticks you may have. If the game has a no audio launch condition then also try that (sorry I don't know if it does).

lastly try reget winmm.dll. If I remember right it is included in VB.net distributions but you may need to check around to double check that,
Update:

I've created a new partition and installed a fresh copy of Win XP on it. After installing the latest drivers, and generally setting the system up, I gave MM7 a spin with GreyFace's unofficial patch.

The good news:
It works!

The bad news:
No music in the game :(

Tried disabling 3D sound in the configuration tool and turning sound acceleration all the way down in dxdiag, no effect. Drivers are up to date. Halp.

in mm7. ini file do you have 'PlayMP3' set to 1?

/ Combining that with earlier error It looks like something might be wrong with your sound chipset.
It was set to 0, just changed it and music works fine now. Many thanks! Maybe I'll finally be able to play the game without any further problems. :D
