OK, this is a weird question, but something strange started happening. Whenever I would leave a shop without buying anything, the shopkeeper would insult me by saying "cheapskate" or something similar. Then after a while it stopped. Any idea what brought this on, and whether it means anything. I thought it was my bad reputation, but now even if I kill peasants and bring it to bad-notorious, they won't insult me.

PS where have all the men from Ironfist gone?

PPS great game!

Would you insult somebody who goes around killing peasants?

Merchants say phrases like "see you, cheapskate", because you took their time and didn't buy or sell anything (sometimes they might ignore it and remain silent). Doesn't have to do anything with reputation.

And there were never any men in Castle Ironfist zone. In all versions of MM 6 this location was populated by women only. Probably has to do with MM6's engine limitations (all zones have maximum 4 types of native NPCs, summoned NPCs (like on Arena) don't count).

If my memory serves correctly, I believe the amount of gold you have is a factor as to whether or not they call you names if you don't buy anything.

So for example visiting an expensive shop, they may not say anything if you have a fairly low amount of gold. But visiting the same shop with a lot of gold, they will insult you as you leave.

After some testing it seems you're right! Thanks.
I believe that the threshold is 10,000 gold; if you have more than that, they'll call you a cheapskate.
They'll insult you yes, but furthermore it won't affect your game at all, luckily :)
I actually find these comments rather funny, especially my characters' reactions to it. It is also featured in MM7-8.
"Thanks for nothing, Moneybags!" is my favorite.
The merchants will insult you if you didn't spend any money on the shop. But if you did spend some money, I think any amount, there would be no insult. Well, everybody needs money. Right? :D

If I remember correctly, all the men of Castle Ironfist left with King Roland and rode off to war against the devils. That's why the King is also missing while Wilbur Humphrey and Nicolai are in the castle in his place. If you talk to the NPCs, they make references to these events.

You get cussed if you're "rich" (I think carrying over 10k gold), and don't spend anything. Now how do they know exactly how much money you're carrying? Maybe you jingle as you walk, or coins are constantly spilling out of your pockets.
