Looking to transfer characters into MM2 from MM1. Just wondering if anyone has some advice. Looks like unless I finish MM1 - transfer in at level seven - other wise level six. Is there any benefit to transferring in after MM1 is complete? I am thinking of just doing it once I hit level 6.

I haven't finished MM1 yet, but I noticed that imported characters' HP is much lower than what they should be considering their endurance stat.
From what I understand the hitpoints you gain per level in MM1 are random, while in MM2 they are fixed and depend on where you train, with Atlanitum giving the most HP. So in terms of Character strength it might be better to create a new party in MM2 and always train in Atlantium. But then you'd miss out on the stat bonuses you can collect in MM1.

So I believe the most optimal way to do it would be to transfer at the lowest level possible where you can still get all of the stat bonuses from the first game. I really don't see an advantage in getting to level seven in MM1 rather than MM2.
It doesn't really matter on the long run if or when you export your characters into MM2 since you'll reach far higher levels and stats there anyway.
The only real benefit of importing into MM2 is that you can skip the character creation and level grinding in the beginning.

You can get your all your stats raised in MM1 so if you're going to finish it anyway it's better to wait with exporting until you've done so, exporting earlier seems pointless, especially since you can roll far higher stats in MM2 than in MM1.

I'd choose the highest possible level for exporting even if you might start with a few HP less than possible, you need more time grinding in the beginning than later in the game.
I summarized my experience with importing characters in this post:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/might_and_magic_series/mm2_import_characters_or_start_over/post11

Basically, you can get all your characters to start MM2 with 20 in every single stat if you import after you've raised your stats in MM1. So that's an advantage to waiting. But really it depends on what you want to do. Do you want to finish MM1, or do you want to just skip to MM2? If you want to finish MM1, I would do so and then import, but if not just go ahead and import once they hit level 6. Personally I enjoyed MM1 a lot so I'd recommend sticking it out, but by all means do whatever you want to do.

As kmonster said, you'll get to MUCH higher levels in MM2 so importing will really only affect the start of the game. It's nice to skip over the early level grinding though.

One final thing to consider: there are two new character classes in MM2, the barbarian and the ninja. To use one of these you have to create a new character; however you can also hire extra party members of these classes if you wish. I ended up using my full MM1 party because I'd grown attached to them, but if the new classes sound cool you might consider making some new characters also.
MM2 is one of the hardest CRPGs ever for new characters. You are supposed to import characters from MM1. Even with imported characters you may still have to flee battes or reload in the first city, though.
Stats are capped at 20 for imported characters, while new characters can start with 21 in one or more stats.
So I definitely recommend importing characters if you can.
If you want to start with lvl 1 characters, try the Amiga version instead. Unless someone can confirm that they have found items that are +33 to +64 in the DOS version, it looks like it's only in the Amiga version you can find the most powerful items.

Quite the opposite. I started both MM1 and MM2 with new characters and found myself reloading in MM1 much more often (but maybe becuase it was a completely new experience to me).

Found MM2 with level 1 characters to be rather easy (easier than MM1). They level up much faster at the beginning.

I'd agree with Waltorious. There is virtually no difference... Since any stats max out @ 20 and you lose items. In fact it's more of a roleplay choice (and being attached to your characters after spending all that time playing them in MM1)..
Thanks everyone - I certainly plan on finishing MM1 - Just wanted to know if it was worth transferring the toons sooner. Looks like I will wait until the end. Giving the nod to Waltorious especially since I missed his other post.

Thanks! That was a really old post though, I didn't expect you to have read it.
