In MM1, I am travelling around map area C-2 above Sorpigal and encounter a square that causes "AVALANCHE!" to flash on the screen indefinitely. From then on the game doesn't respond to any keypresses, and I'm forced to restart from my last save point. Is this a bug or "obstacle" in the original game, or a problem with DOSbox?
In any case, I will avoid this square in the future. It is at C-2 (15, 8). :)

Quote from another widely-copied walkthrough on internet: At x15,y8 there will be an avalanche that will block your return.
Since there's no such issue described, I guess that it is a problem with DOSbox. If you send me your savegame (attach it here), I can check with the GOG version and another one and tell you the results.
(Hmm, seeing that it is quite at the beginning of the game I can try to play to it.)
EDIT: Please attach the save file, I am not in the mood to play MM1 now but will check it out.

As its located above the first town, the save file will start at the same inn as a new game. I've uploaded my save file so that it's a little easier to fight any monsters you may encounter. Here you go:

I don't have any issues here on the GOG version, and also not in the original version (although I don't remember why the original one looks strangely greenish - must've played around with the graphset.exe file - but it works without DosBox o.O).
I only pressed the right arrow key and the party looked to the right. Although you really shouldn't go there yet anyway - three fields further a strong bunch of monsters waits (seems to be random which ones).
EDIT: Ok, starting without DosBox makes it greenish on GOG version, too (seems identical to the original version also from the file dates). I also tested the Avalanche from the other side and also worked without the bug you mentioned.

So I tried again, and the problem was that I had the cycle count set so low in DOSbox to make reading the combat messages easier. Unfortunately, this had the side effect of making this square very unresponsive -- it only reads your key presses between the flashes of AVALANCHE! :) Holding the arrow key down helped me get away.
Thanks!

+1 for this post. 10 years later, it helped me get out of the same trap. I thought I was going to have to give up on MM1 and am glad I'll be able to keep playing. Thanks!
