Hello.

I know that GoG officially doesn't support Windows 8 yet.

But anyway, even if this post doesn't have a response, I espect this message would serve for informative purpouse to GoG tech support.

So, thanks for reading.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fact is that M&M IX doesn't work on Windows 8.

The application launcher run well, but the game itself has annoyning issues.

First, when it have to go to fullscreen it didn't. Instead goes to a fake fullscreen mode with an allways visible window title bar.

Then, when you try any of the menú options (for example "New game"), the screen freezes yet the music still plays. At this point, waiting the game to response is futile.

Alt-tabbing makes no more productive. Doing so you can see partially your desktop at low resolution (800x600). The mouse pointer is hiding. And can't close/terminate the application by right-clicking the game icon on the bar menú with the option "Close window"). That simply don't work.

Sometimes (very unlikely), when alt-tabbing back to the game you can see the next screen (the one that should appear after select one of the menú options before), but if you click another option, the freeze repeats again.

If you have luck enough that you can run the proccess administrator (difficult), trying to kill/terminate/close the game from here not allways be posible.

It would from the in-game option "Exit", if you could reach the option in this cycling alt-tabbing issue.

I tried the various Windows compatibility modes, each one same improductive.

Thinking if it would be posible that it was a Directx versión issue, I also go to Microsoft homepage and downloaded the latest Directx redistributable.

But then the installer didn't install. Directx 9 simply can't be installed on Windows 8.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------

PS : Pufff, I think Windows 8 would be really a difficult OS to be supported by GoG cause its backward incompatibilities.
Yeh, I only got to play MMIX for only 2 days :(...

Installed Windows 8 and no go... :(...

I though installing a new OS would at least still work properly...
Ive installed DX9 and such, but still doesnt work...
game installed well,i get the same frame, whenever i click on start game however it just plain freezes up
Run Lithtech.exe with "+windowed 1" argument to make it work nicely in W8.

Interesting, but how should I do that?

The game launcher points to mm9.exe, not to Lithtech.exe.

And I can't modify launch options of Lithtech.exe directly, because this is not a direct link, but a proper EXE.

EDIT:

Seems that adding the parameter to mm9.exe is valid too.

The problem is that still is windowed mode, not fullscreen.

But thanks for the info.

I have made a Windows 8 fullscreen border fix; install that and the game will display correctly in fullscreen mode. :)

You'll also want to set 32-bit color mode to prevent freezing in menus.

I also wanted to add this for anyone else who wasn't sure how to force 32-bit

http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Might_and_Magic_IX#Run_in_32-bit_color

Also, I edited "bitdepth" to 32 as well.

I really didn't overcome the freeze, however, until setting compatibility for Windows 98/ME which made it run perfectly along with your patch.

I also added the TELP13a UnOfficial patch but not sure if that was necessary.

I edited the ditdepth to 32, but I can't save the changes, a little box showing "access denied" is displayed. Any ideas on how I can bypass that? :/

Did you install the game into Program Files? The GOG installer avoids this for a reason. Reinstall outside Program Files for best results.

Ha ha, I got that too but I figured it is because I haven't done a fresh OS install in a long time and I've been hacked to shit. XD

I remember dislodging the lock using a cross between recreating the cfg file on desktop, using an unlocking utility to unlock the original, throwing away the original and then moving the new cfg from desktop into the folder.

I've been trying out several M&M's however, and I don't remember for which, but I did actually create a "3DO" folder instead of installing default (like I normally do) because the installer was placing the game in GOG's Downloader folder (the Downloader program itself and not the folder for GOG Downloads).

THANK YOU!!!

This did the magical trick.

I normally dont post here, but I wanted to thank all of you, to get it to work, especially Arkose, that program you wrote was awesome!!!

So just to summarize what worked for the Imac with Win8:

1.) Install MM9 in a different folder, as suggested *example c:/mightandmagic10*
2.) Download the fix and unzip it, then install it.
3.) Go to your MM9 folder and change screendepth AND bitdepth to 32 as via the link
4.) Then start MM9 and it should be working just fine!!!

Thanks again!
Thanks pals.

PS : I can't figure how to mark this as solved.

When you make a new thread you can either post a "topic" or a "question" (something like that). Only "questions" can be marked as solved. You posted a topic. :^) No worries. Happens all the time.
Hello,

I run mm9 in 32-bit color mod, but still all windowes freeze time to time.
And still game process is not comfortable.

Are there other ways to solve this problem?
