I had a similar problem with MM1, which is quite stingy with experience, and often quite brutal when exploring new areas. I just kept plugging away, exploring a new area, and if I died (more often than not) I'd go back to a previous area I knew I could survive and grind up a bit more experience, then try exploring a different new location, or back to where I died if I thought I could do better.

Later MM games give out much more experience.
If you have lots of gold, you could also use the fabulous fabled fountain and convert it into experience points.
Yeah now that I found Wyverns are very easy and they give nice exp and gold, I think I am doing much better now.
Is funny, I have the wyvern eye, after defeat the hydra and so, that was easy, BUT im unable to complete the previous quest about medusa head, because the basiliks turn all my party into stone, and seems is nothing i can do to prevent, either spells or fountains or anything. How do you handle with stone at level 8-9?

Also what the "silent Chime" do?

EDIT: For some reason the game started up with Town 3 instead of Town 1; now I see them so maybe I can go from here.

Hope I am not seen as butting in here, but I have finally started up trying to play Might & Magic 1 (never played any of them before).

One dumb situation: I don't seem to be able to add any of the pregen characters in the game into a party to actually "Go To Town" and start.

According to the manual:

"Set Up Your Party
To add a character to your party, hold down CONTROL and press the KEY LETTER next to the character's
name on the list of available characters. A @ will appear next to the character's name, marking him/her as a
member of your party."

However, holding down the CTRL key and pushing in any letters A - F corresponding to the pregen characters at the "View All Characters" screen does NOTHING. No @ symbol appears. (I've tried both left & right CTRL keys in case it matters.)

So am I doing something wrong, or any other ideas how to get going?

Is your party already full? You can only have 6 characters in party.

If I'm not mistaken, it casts Silence. Can't remember if it's a quest item too.

If you have the guidbook, you can check the end of it for a list of items, including their special properties.

Also might not be too useful for you now, but for people just starting you can take the scroll to Erliquim quest as many times as you like.
Is there anything I can do against being turned to stone by certain monsters? My whole party is on level 9 and 10 (which means I can cast level 5 spells) and everytime I meet a group of medusas or basilisks the game is over within seconds.

I don't think there's anything that protects against theit stoning attacks, so you need to kills them ASAP. If you can't act before them you probably need to increase your Speed stat first, since Speed determines initiative.
To cure Stoning I recall there was an item (some oil?) that cured it.

If memory serves me well there is a high level Cleric spell that cures everything save eradication.
There is a Stone to Flesh spell too, which cures stone. It is lower level than divine intervention.

But like Petrus said, there is nothing to protect you from getting stoned. My advice: simply wait till you're bit higher level.
Thank you. I think I will really wait untill I'm two levels higher. Lost some progress the last days, because I always played for some hours and got killed minutes before I reached an Inn and could save. But I don't think it's very frustrating. At least I got some new areas mapped and can easily return when I'm ready for them.
I found protection from Magic to be effective and vital in MM2 for protecting against stone and insta-kill effects, however I never really tried it in MM1 so don't know if it works as well. In general I relied on killing them before they killed me. Stone to flesh only ever seemed to work after combat in MM1 and every time I tried it in combat it failed without explanation.

In MM1 I think Protection From Magic is useful mainly for certain magic-based traps. But I might not remember correctly.
More a rhetoric question than anyting else, but are there any more annoying creatures in this game than the damn Invisible Things that tend to steal your backpacks with all the quest items inside???
most annoying monsters I ran into in MM1 were the Ghosts that age you (only had to deal with them for one quest-related fight though) and the Gorgons that stone everybody. You really don't resist that stuff unless you raise your level a ton. Don't know of any other way to resist it.

Worst monster of all time has to be the Leprechaun from MM2. Their only attack involves disintegrating all of your party's gold..... made me want to punch JVC so hard when I saved afterwards without noticing first. Luckily it was still early on and I didn't lose much hehe.

Also I don't want to spoil anything but the creatuers who guard a certain high-tech device in that dungeon where you can teleport to one of several castles.... I never could beat those guys. They have the same graphic as flesh-eater I think, but they consistently did like 1k damage to me if I remember right. Luckily they were optional.
