I never played it, but I heard a lot of bad things about it.

But to be honest, aside from being a little buggy, the only complaints I heard is that it isn't like the recent games, but instead went back to it's roots playing adding tons of retro elements from MM1 which was the entire point.
Also people complained about it going entirely fantasy ditching the sci-fi elements.

So really I don't know how to judge, because I want to play it myself. I don't follow opinions, I make my own. But I can't imagine that the bad reception will keep it from a release, I mean there are quite a few notoriously despised games that made their way on here.

It isn't bad because it is a bit "retro", it is bad, because it is badly optimized, it went too much on hardcore side (MM series weren't hardcore), there is barely any character progression, it is unforgivably small (but artificially protracted by "hardcoreness"), very restricting, and so on.

If you want some game similar to Might and Magic 3-5, look for Yendorian Tales II-III (1st was a bit different), that's if you didn't play them yet.

Also I don't believe that MM X will make it here anytime soon. Heroes 6 isn't here. We have only those MM games here which were made directly by JVC and his people. This is also why MM X is entirely non-MM game, there is no JVC's touch to it.

It wouldn't be bad for it to appear here, more games is always good, but MM X shouldn't be looked at as true MM game.
I liked it. I never finished it as I got stuck (I think I leveled my guys wrong) but I'll probably play it again. I really enjoyed it.

It had a similar feel and a dissimilar feel to the old games, which liked. Ubi took a risk doing such a game and their dev did a fair job. I applaud whenever a developer takes a risk to bring something unique. And MM X is certainly unique -- borrowing attributes from ancient and modern alike.

It is tied to their DRM and once upon a time I remember reading that they won't untether it to Ubiplay or whatever that thing is called due to "corporate policy." That's the way they want to play it and they lost quite a few sales because of it.

I really really hate that copyright rule. This is why we don't have Wizardry 1-5, and Myst 3 and 4. I'm not sure whether to call it OCD, but having an incomplete set of games really bugs me.

I've played MM X, I've never beaten it but it's essentially a generic dungeon runner game with some MM appearance. Such as the starting town being call Sorpigal-by-the-Sea and using sound effects from mm6. It doesn't really play like any of the other might and magic, the classes or restrictive, monster don't re spawn which mean leveling is restrictive. In fact I found a few time I get to a boss and have the backtrack hunting down hidden areas for monster I hadn't kill just to beat the boss.

I would say MMX over all isn't that bad a game but it's not the best dungeon crawler I played.
MMX is simply wonderfull ! It goes back to oldschool RPGs dungeons and brings really nice game experience with new modern graphic - i really do like it ! I am only in the beginning but I am very nice surprised with it - last MM game MM9 was pretty bad, so I had very few expectations - but this one is good.

Seems like Ubisoft can make good games !
Just FYI, Might and Magic X was developed by Limbic Entertainment, a small German company. Not directly made by Ubisoft, just published.

I just wish that Jon Van Caneghem could be hired to develop a new MM game. It couldn't possibly be that hard to Ubisoft to hire him? Or maybe it could haha, I don't know anything about that kind of stuff. I can dream though.

Well, didn't Ubisoft work with him for several past games? Keep in mind I'm not exactly certain when Ubisoft replaced 3DO. But I agree, if he had stayed for "one last game" I wouldn't complain if X was the final game in the entire series, especially with the whole "back to where it started" style. I mean with Wizardry 8 there are haters who cry out at its faults, but I respect the fact they at least finished the arc. And really, that was the entire purpose, the ending HAD to be told.

One thing I despise is when a series ends on a cliffhanger or still has something that needs to be told or explained, and just... stops.

In fact Ron Gilbert fully intended to end Monkey Island that way, "Purposely" leaving us begging for answers and wondering what the heck went on.

And the novel Stuart Little literally had no ending period, I swear the writer just stopped mid-way immediately sending it for publishing.

MMX is Might and Magic in name only.

JVC has had no involvement with Ubisoft. IIRC, he was fired before 8 was finished, and had no involvement with 9 at all either. I do wish he would come back and start a new cRPG series. I'd love a game in the vein of World of Xeen.

Personally, what I wish, is a "new" retro RPG in the same Apple II graphics that the older games had, or like Wizardry or Bard's Tale, I mean it's been done with almost everything "except" those classic style RPGs.

Now for example, if X had a option where you could actually tweak the graphics so it resembled Might&Magic 1, like the Special Edition Lucasarts games do. I would totally get that, I don't care how sucky people say it is, I would totally love if I could just press a key to go back and forth between retro and modern graphics at will.

And don't get me started on Shadowgate, I felt ripped off because it said it had a retro mode, which I was certain it meant the NES sound and graphics, the promotional screenshots on this very site even compared the NES graphics side-by-side to the current., but all retro mode did was blur the pixels which gave me eyestrain looking at it too long.

I'll be the heathen here and say that I liked Might and Magic X. I might've liked it more than it deserved (It came out in early 2014, a few months before the big kickstarter RPG revivals like Divinity and Wasteland 2 and I was game for anything that tried to be even vaguely retro), but it's a solid old-school party-based dungeon crawler that has its heart in the right place even if it doesn't quite nail the execution. The world is a little too small and constrained to be as exploration-focused as it wants to be, there are some annoying balance issues, it's honestly a little too hard for what kind of game the older M&Ms were, the way artifacts work essentially makes normal loot uninteresting, etc etc. If you ever do play it, just keep your expectations in check. It's better than Heroes VI was.

I don't see it coming to GOG anytime soon though, since Ubisoft doesn't seem to want to release any of their newer PC games (2008-ish and onwards) onto this service since that's when they started UPlay. And really, the less said about UPlay the better...

If you have a Nintendo DS, take a look at the game "The Dark Spire". That game, which is similar (but not identical) to classic Wizardry in terms of gameplay, actually does have an option that gives you classic Wizardry style graphics and 8-bit NES-style music.

Elminage Gothic doesn't have such a mode, but it is much like the classic Wizardry games in gameplay. (And there's one post-game dungeon you might like, but it's a secret.)
Heartily second the recommendation for The Dark Spire. Excellent game. =)
