I remember playing this when I was younger and I recall getting experience by tossing gold into a fountain. So after looting the pre-made characters for items and gear and making my party I headed for the first fountain I could find and tossed a coin in. But instead of gaining experience it spawned a group of monsters that almost wiped out my party, What did I do wrong?

You need to lift the ooze curse of the town first. i.e. solve the quest in the sewers. Let me know if you need more spoilers.
