Well, started up the game tonight. Created characters and began to explore Sorpigal. But is there supposed to not be any music? Only the rare sound effect?

I have watched a few videos on Youtube for the beginning of the game and have heard music, but I am guessing it is maybe their own music playing in the background? I do hear the music playing at the title screen.

Also, how do you quit this game? I understand you can only save at Inns after you choose to sign in. But there is no option to 'Quit game'. I've had to Ctrl+Alt+Del just to get out of the game. I am sure there is a way to quit the game. I've tried hitting ESC and there is no choice to quit when I chose 'Y' on signing in (saving).

Finally, do you need to choose your party every time you start up the game? Is there no way to keep your same party chosen and just go with it right away when loading up?

No music, unless you're playing the NES version or something. (The videos probably just took the music for the NES version.)

No way to quit, either, as games back then were not designed to be run from a hard drive. You were expected to turn off the computer when dune. If you are playing on an emulator such as DOSBox, just close the emulator window (for DOSBox, if it's full screen, Alt+Enter will switch to windowed mode, so you can close the window).

You do have to choose your party each time you start, but that shouldn't take long.

(By the way, if you decide to try the NES version, watch out for Locust Plagues; thanks to a couple bugs in that version of the game, if one of them gets a chance to attack, it's game over. The NES version appears to be reasonable otherwise.)

I'm not going to play the NES version, I bought it via GOG for my computer, so no concern of the Locust Plagues.

Actually, it looks like Alt+Q will quit you out of the game totally. Will completely shut down the game. So obviously save first and then you can Alt+Q.

Thank you for confirming on the music. I had figured it was their own custom music, but wanted to make sure there wasn't an issue with my game not running for whatever reason.

Ok, I had done some more reading last night on tips for the game for character creation and one of the websites, which appeared to be more helpful than a lot of others, the person gave the recommended stats for all the classes (including the Robber, which doesn't have required attributes for the class) and said what you should shoot for.

This is what he said: "Basically you want the attributes you use to be as high as possible, and by high, I mean at least above 15 or so or so. Prepare to do a lot of rerolling."

Now he had just got done giving recommendations of 3-5 attributes for each on what they should use. All of them needing Endurance and Speed (part of that 3-5 recommended).

I'm sorry, but I'm just finding that impossible to roll up. I've been rolling for the last 45 minutes just trying to get my Robber (he recommends Might, Endurance, Accuracy, Speed and Luck). There is no way I've gotten close to all 5 of those attributes at 15+.

Do you really need stats that high starting out? What is recommended? It feels like I will never get these guys rolled up appropriately enough to start playing.

The thing with MM1 is that unlike the next games, you'll get little chance to upgrade them (it happens a bit late in the game), so starting stats are important. Drop the Might and Accuracy. Robber's attack will be far behind the fighter/archer/paladin anyway. His main and pretty much only purpose is Traps, any attacks he makes are just gravy.

If there is one stat that's important to all it's Speed.

Yeah, I had figured that with this game in that you can't raise your stats all that much.

I ended up re-rolling my Robber and got better stats than my prior one. Not still to what the website recommended. This is what I went with:

PER 10
END 10
SPD 13
ACY 15
LUC 19 (must have a racial bonus, Gnome)

Is that fast enough? I mean I guess my question is what is considered a 'good enough' stat? What is that bar for a stat? Is it 15? Or is 13 still considered good?

The website did say not to skimp on Might for the Robber, said this part in bold: "Don't neglect Might on your Rogue (Robber) like I did. He will be in melee often enough later in the game, so it sucks that mine didn't do any decent damage."

Trying to re-roll for my Paladin now. This is what I currently have for him:

Do I need to re-roll for him, or is that sufficient? Honestly, I have been finding it difficult getting that high of stats for him again.

Both are good as far as I see.

The thing with Robbers is they always get only 1 attack per round no matter how much they level. Even if they always hit (which they won't) they'll still do significantly less damage then fighers with multiple attacks.

So what is considered as a 'good' stat on rolling your stats? Something you should be realistically be aiming for on the primary stats? (including Speed)

For Speed I went with 13+. I'd say this is a good definition of a "good" stat. I tried to get 15+ INT/PER for my primary spellcasters and 15+ Might for Fighter.

Ok, thank you. That really helps a lot. Now what would you say for Endurance and Accuracy (for non-casters). So 13+ Endurance enough? Same with Accuracy?

Yes. For robbers I'd say endurance is more important than accuracy. As I said they won't be your main attackers but you'll want the HP so they don't die too fast. You can skip ACC for robbers if you get it at 10 for example with good stats otherwise.

Well, my Robber's Accuracy is 15 and Endurance is 10. But her Luck is 19 (which I think Luck is her most important stat). I'm guessing she has a 19 because she has a racial bonus in being a Gnome? Or is it something else?

But what I'm saying with that kind of Luck, I don't think I will be re-rolling to have a higher Endurance, unless you feel it is that important to bump it up higher?

No, in the grand scheme of things that luck's more important. Leave it.

Stats have great impact up to 21. After that there's diminishing returns, and the difference between 50 and 100 is not that big.
