I have played MM6 way back then in whatever form it came on CD (in a magazine) and it worked fine as far as I could tell. Now there are grayface patches for 6-8 and I wonder if I really need it to MM7 to be able to play it properly. I have Windows 7 by the way. Looking at the posts it looks like the patch brought its own share of bugs, which some of can be fixed with some work around, which honesty deters me because I am not a computer genius, and I am afraid I wouldn't be able to do them.

Is everybody playing it with the grayface patch or just offical patch or no patch at all? I don't even understand why offical patches need to be DL-ed... shouldn't those be included in the GOG version to start with?

Sidenote: I haven't bought the game yet.

I've played through just fine on my Win7 machine without Greyface. I say go ahead and play the GOG version.
Played GOG's version without Greyface.

GOG's already includes official patches.
I played with Greyface to be on the safe side. There still are some bugs, though, like the invisible Blue Dragon in the Dragon Cave.

I also used dgVoodoo which makes the game look much better.

Downside with the GF+dgVoodoo combo is that I couldn't play Acromage, and the game crashed occasionally.
I think the only crashes I had with MM6 with GF (but not dgVoodoo) was when there was an insane amount of monsters activated on the map.
Play what you are most comfortable with. CD/Official Patch was all I had for years, and it was completely playable.

The GOG version of MM7 has the official patch, and also sports a rather interesting change of its own: haste is fixed in spell format. No need to level up a Druid to make the potion any longer. It sticks the closest to 'vanilla' game intentions, I believe. It is also very friendly for those who are not interested in fiddling with .ini settings, etc.

I personally miss the chest-fix from Greyface, a bit, when playing without. It made it so that after opening a chest which generated more loot than it could hold, the rest of the loot would show up when opening it a second time. It is not required for the game at all, though, and if you just want to easily install-n-play without issues, GOG's is probably the way to go!

This alone sounds like reason enough to never install that combo. :O

Could you elaborate on this?

This was from last year, so I don't know if anything is different since then. I think there is a video on Youtube already about haste in MM7 GOG. The short of it:

---GOG Version---
Haste Potion : Works
Haste Spell/Pedestal : Works

---CD---
Haste Potion : Works
Haste Spell/Pedestal : Broken

IIRC I could play if I switched to software mode.
But I already played Acromage to death firdt time I played MM7.

EDIT: turns out I can't play Arcomage with dgVoodoo; the mouse won't work properly. Something about the FPS being reduced to single digits in that window.
Pity, since the game looks so much better with dgVoodoo.

Thank you all for the replies! It is a relief to know that I can play it as it is. I am looking forward to immerse myself into the same world I so fondly remember from MM6!
Wrong solution, GrayFace bring so much to MM7, such as MouseLook, unspolied BlackPotions, many corrections.
This should be the GOG version.
