So, thanks to amazon I now own Shadow of War (base).

I would not mind throwing (some, reasonable) money to upgrade to the definitive edition, but I can't see any way to do so beyond buying the game completely?

Am I missing an option?

And that will bring the base game up to the 'definitive' edition? Just quadruple checking. thanks

Yes, I think it should.
According to GOG Database, Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition is a package that contains both the base game and the expansion pass.
However, if you buy both the base game and the expansion pass, the definitive edition may still appear as not owned on the store page, whereas, if you buy the definitive edition, both the base game and the expansion pass will surely appear as owned on the store page.

I have the original on steam but I bought the definitive edition on GOG, will that be a problem? At the moment it says I own the definitive edion but I cannot access it at all, I can open the base game in GOG but when I try to use things from the definitive edition I get sent to the microsoft store

Scratch that I have it on Game Pass not Steam.

What do you mean by saying "I cannot access it at all"? DO you use Galaxy? How did you install the GOG version?
