OK, I'm wondering if this is just me or a known issue - if I change the 'Desired Framerate' setting in the video options menu to a value higher than 30 the floating stars around my halo and some weapons disappear.
I also noticed missing smoke, particle and fire effects on my first playthrough with this setting at 60. I only realised something was amiss when I got stuck and watched a YouTube clip and seen all these things that were missing from my game.
Changing the Desired Framerate setting doesn't seem to have an affect on the actual framerate, it appears to run at 60 fps no matter what I select. Only the graphic effects vanish the higher I go.
This happens in both the D3D and Glide versions.
