I'm trying to run the D3D version of Messiah to get higher res textures compared to the 3dfx version.

But when I try to run the D3D exe with the -x parameter (supposedly to show the display resolution dialog), the game crashes outright with an error.

I have an older version of the gog installer, I extracted messiahd3d.exe from there but that one only allows 4 resolutions up to 1280*1024. (It's a dialog with 4 radio buttons, not a drop-down list.)

Someone posted here that they can make the MessiahD3D.exe run in higher res and even widescreen. Could you post your messiah.cfg with resolution set to 1920*1080 (or better yet, 2560*1440), or the version of MessiahD3d.exe which allows this setting?

Thank you.
Hi, that was me. The version of Messiah that will do that is the retail version. I make no promises about it working when you drop it in your GOG-version Messiah directory, but the latest retail patch from a decade ago contains that fresh copy of MessiahD3D.exe and can be obtained here: http://www.interplay.com/downloads/messiah02.exe

That exe will try to find a Messiah install to patch, but the GOG one won't be recognized. You need to extract messiah02.exe as if it were an archive, which will reveal all the files it contains. 7-zip can do this for you, I don't know if Windows on its own will just let you do that like how it has the built in ability to create zip's. Winzip may be able to as well, on the off chance you still have that. You can get 7-zip here http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

I'm also going to speculate that this will disable all the music and the sounds for cinematics, since the retail exe looks for those as audio tracks on a physical CD that came with the boxed game, while the GOG version has them stored locally as MP3 files. Still, good luck!
^ Just tried that. Replaced the MessiahD3D from the 02 patch. It crashed. Got it to run in safemode, but graphics is low-res and blocky. All I copied to the GOG folder was the MessiahD3D.exe file. If anyone manages to get it to work in hi-res, mind posting what you did?
