I'm surprised this is as it is right now, but I find it pretty annoying, more so because of the lack of D-Pad functionality for the menus.

When you break parts in the inventory, there should be a dialogue box that explains what the item is, rather than having to go up 2 options, check the item and then go down to the break parts option so you don't accidentally break something of value.

Would be great if this was patched in!

As this is the first thread, I gotta say I am loving this game! Unfortunate that it does not have online multiplayer, but the game itself is very solid and plays very well!

I agree, it is a bit tedious in switching back and forth between the two states in the menu to figure out what isn't worth keeping.

Though I wonder if this is a bug or not, but I find that the item selected changes if there is a stack still in the inventory. For example, if you are deleting three legs in a stack, the interface will switch to another item in your inventory after you delete two of the three legs from the stack. That makes you accidentally delete an item you may want to keep.

Yeah I've noticed that too, it's definitely inconsistent with other games with the same function. Afraid they may say it's intended as a way to not break your last part by in the stack by accident.
