This MDK guide is meant to provide quick help on how to best set up the GOG version of MDK.

GRAPHICS: The 3dfx version of MDK is to be preferred as it provides countless monitor resolutions, and runs silky-smooth at a locked 30 FPS without issues. On the other hand, the D3D version doesn't run very properly at all (missing textures), and the software version sticks to its low 640 x 480 px resolution and lacks texture filtering among other things.

1) Start the "nGlide Settings" shortcut.
2) Set your preferred screen resolution (e.g., 1920 x 1080).
3) Set aspect ratio to the original 4:3 of the game.
4) Click on "Apply" to save your settings.

5) Always start the game with the "MDK (3dfx)" shortcut from here on out.
6) In the in-game Options menu (F12) under Display set Detail to High for maximum graphical fancy.

CONTROLS: Use of mouse and keyboard is recommended. The control scheme for MDK may be somewhat archaic by today's standard but not by much.

In the Options menu (F12) under Mouse:

1) Set mouse to Enabled.
2) Set X-axis to Turn, Y-axis to Off, and Z-axis to Sniper Zoom.
3) Leave Fire (left mouse button), Sniper (middle mouse button), and Jump (right mouse) as is.

In the Options menu (F12) under Keyboard:

1) Rebind the following keys:

Left: "Q"
Right: "E"
Up: "W"
Down: "S"
Strafe Left: "A"
Strafe Right: "D"
SetTurbo: "Shift"
Next Item: "F"
Last Item: "R"
Use Item "Space"

The rest of the keys are not required as the mouse has them covered, and can be bound to whatever keys you wish.

QUICK SAVE: The game has a built-in quick-save option which is largely undocumented for some reason. Use F2 to save, and F3 to load wherever you wish in the game.

FAST RUNNING: It is highly recommended to leave SetTurbo ("Caps-lock" by default) on during your playthrough as it truly shows how MDK was meant to be played.

D3D version has superior texture resolution though (and option to turn off arguably ugly bilinear filtering of textures)
Using my XBox One controller works fine so far though, it registers as a game pad, though doesn't recognize the D-pad and I still need to use the keyboard to menu and to advance cut-screens.

Just for the record :)

EDIT: Spoke a bit too soon, RB and LB does not seem to want to register either.
EDIT2: XD I spoke too soon again, I had two icons in the HUD and thought both were items, when in reality, one was special ammo and thus could not be switched to. D'oh!

EDIT/ADD: Z-axis was reversed (LT = Right, RT = Left) but that was fixed by using the 'Negative Side Step' option instead of the regular one. Nice. :)

For real retro feeling you should not set the resolution too high. In the days no one had the expensive hardware.

My d pad works just fine
Is there an option to change FOV?!
I cannot play it due motion sickness.
