Some of the minor changes to the basic gameplay are just different enough from MoO & MoO2 that there are some interesting variations of strategy. None of these are really combat related, and this latest bugfix might change all that anyway.
1. Use your production for trade goods to develop other colonies faster. With a high enough income from a few systems generating trade goods, you can pretty much buy a new colony up to quick production in 5-6 turns. It works even better if you have a couple of large systems with swamp, terran, ocean, or other good habitats to send more colonists.
2. Have a standby fleet. Once you've built close to your limit in command points, build some more ships at 5-6 (or more) planets, but one or two turns before they are finished, move them back to the queue and let them sit. If you ever have a major battle and lose some ships, you can replace them almost immediately, which tends to overwhelm your opponents in a roughly even match.
