I don't think there is an official statement that the devs have abandoned MoO4 but you can consider it final as it is with the latest update I think half a year ago.

There are ongoing community patches & mods:

https://www.gog.com/forum/master_of_orion_conquer_the_stars/unofficial_code_patch_release

https://www.nexusmods.com/masteroforionconquerthestars

But thats it to my knowledge.

Can someone explain this whole "abandonment" thing to me? Do people really need an endless string of patches or they can't justify playing the game anymore? I just don't get it.

The game isn't "abandoned", there just isn't really anything else to do right now. You can only throw out so many patches and DLC before you simply run out. MoO2 had only a few patches and zero DLC, and needed third-party patches to fix a number of old issues; no one seemed to mind this.

edit: By the time of MoO2, most patches for any game were released through the internet. Far as I know, the only way you could get v1.31 was through a download. I think v1.1 had a reprint for it, but that's the only one I've ever heard of.

This also doesn't change my point: no one has ever seen MoO2 as a lesser game for all the problems it has. It has always been seen as a masterpiece even though it has mechanics that literally don't work. The MoO2 unofficial patch is still ongoing, just like MoO4's is.

that was 30 years ago when u couldnt patch a game every few weeks via internet (i mean technicly u could but most people relied on cds from magazines etc.) welcome in the future where patching is easy :)
Just for reference, there's a pair of threads where folks keep track of updates on the games here at GoG:

Weekly Digest Thread: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_what_did_just_update_weekly_digest

Working Thread: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_what_did_just_update_thread

If you drop 'Master Orion' into the search for either thread, you can see what folks have noted.

Hope this helps
